Extractions: John Adams was born in a small New England village near Boston called Braintree. This village was settled by Pilgrims who had come to America from England in search of religious freedom. The young John Adams and his father often argued about how important it was to get an education. Young John often skipped school, and when his father asked him why, he told his father that all he wanted was to be a farmer. As he grew up, he realized that an education was important. He studied hard, then went on to college at Harvard. At Harvard he studied law, and upon his graduation he became a great lawyer. John Adams became famous for his strong opinion that everyone deserved a fair trial. He got national recognition in 1761 when, as a representative of the state of Massachusetts, he fought the decision that gave the British the right to search any house, ship, or shop at any time without permission of the owners. In the words of John Adams, "Then and there, the child Independence was born." Later that same year, he married his childhood sweetheart Abigail Smith. Abigail was an outspoken lady who was opposed to slavery and believed that women should get the same education as men. Abigail Smith Adams was the only First Lady to have both a husband and a son as President of the United States.

Regularly scheduled tours of the historic homes, are offered in season (April 19th - November 10th). The park provides a trolley bus that offers transportation between sites. "Their passions are inflamed by Words." In David McCullough's majestic biography of Adams, the second U.S. President, one has a strong sense that it was literary ingenuity as much as a rich perceptive intelligence that defined his career. In sending him to College his family seem to have hoped that he would become a clergyman; but he soon found himself too much of a free thinker to feel at home in the pulpit of that day. When accused of Arminiamsm, he cheerfully admitted the charge. Later in life he was sometimes called a Unitarian, but of dogmatic Christianity he seems to have had as little as Franklin or Jefferson. "Where do we find," he asks, "a precept in the gospel requiring ecclesiastical synods, convocations, councils, decrees, creeds, confessions, oaths, subscriptions, and whole cartloads of other trumpery that we find religion encumbered with in these days." In this mood he turned from the ministry and began the study of law at Worcester. There was then a strong prejudice against lawyers in New England, but the profession throve lustily nevertheless, so litigious were the people. In 1758 Adams began the practice of his profession in Suffolk County, having his residence in Braintree.
