Students will read and answer questions on "Why Are There No Great Women Artists?" by Dr. Linda Nochlin, professor of art history at Yale University. The article is a bit long and her cynicism is dated, but selective reading (or adaptation, if the teacher wishes) makes it accessible. Linda Nochlin denies the nineteenth century notions that art springs from genius plus the expression of emotion. Rather she posits that creativity is a function of social conditions: family background and encouragement, institutions that reward artists, education, and financial stability. It is a social causation theory, which is not new among political philosophers, historians, art historians, or aestheticians; but Nochlin is the first to apply it to the question, "Why are there no great women artists?" Whether students agree with her or not, her writing makes for excellent discussion about an important issue in aesthetics.

Using the Soda Internal Vibrating Pager project as a case study I will talk about our different roles as creators and consumers of new media knowledge, products and services and how these work with or against contemporary fine art practice. The Pager Project is a mixed media project developed by artist Lucy Kimbell, which has several sites, mapping an economics of sexual desire. It involves the production and distribution of a limited edition of vibrating pagers (designed to be worn internally); and media interfaces stimulating calls to the pagers operating within the usual arenas of (primarily) male desire including 0898 chat lines, print media, the web, and cards in phone boxes. All students on the course will meet together weekly with one or both of the course directors for (at least) 2 hours each week to work through the topics involved in each unit. For each essay one of the directors of the course will be a tutor. Deadlines for preliminary drafts of essays will be negotiated and agreed individually, should be adhered to, and will always provide the occasion for individual consultation (minimum time 1 hour). In addition, students will normally have a minimum of 2 meetings with their tutors for each essay to decide the essay topic and to provide final feedback on the assessment. In addition it is expected that the students taking this course will themselves organise regular meetings together to discuss shared interests in the topics they will engage in, will report to the directors on the progress of these meetings and will call on the help of the course directors from time to time who may assist in drawing on the interests of other members of the university as and when this is possible.
