Admission criteria include (1) a degree from an accredited institution, comparable to the bachelor's degree offered at Berkeley; (2) sufficient undergraduate training to undertake graduate study in the chosen field; and (3) a satisfactory scholastic average. The graduate program affords an opportunity for structuring a program of study to meet the specific interests of its own students as well as students from other fields who select a minor concentration in either African or African American studies. The curriculum reflects a multidisciplinary and comparative approach to the experience of African peoples throughout the world. Degree candidates take a major concentration in either African or African American studies and a minor concentration in the area not selected for the major or in another graduate field. After the first semester the student forms a Special Committee to supervise his or her program. A thesis proposal must be submitted at the end of the first year of graduate study. It is obvious, for example, that the experience of African Americans has been profoundly shaped by the concept of "race," the development of which is one of the central objects of study in the field of African American Studies. However, race-thinking classifies not just Africans and their descedants but all other human beings as well. Therefore, in thinking about the ethical and political consequences of race-thinking or exploring the intellectual history of the race-concept, the Afro-American Studies faculty are raising questions relevant to the experiences of all the peoples of the Americas and to the experiences of all modern peoples.
