Scope: The Documents collection contains materials published by the United States federal government, the United Nations, and state and local governments (all states). The Maps collection contains approximately 160,000 sheet maps. The Micromaterials collection is one of the largest in the United States. Access : The Department is located in the basement of Strozier Library. It is open all hours that the library is open and has its own Information Desk and Reserve (2 hours use within the library only) collection. Most documents and many atlases and sheet maps may be borrowed for use outside the library; the circulation period is 3 weeks for everyone. Your university ID is your library card; you MUST have it with you to borrow materials or use Reserve materials.

In 1972, he became the first regular faculty member in Afro-American Studies at the University of California-Berkeley, and served as chair of the department from 1972-73. Banks teaches courses on black males in American culture, jazz and jazz musicians in the U.S., and blacks and Jews in American life. His major work, Black Intellectuals: Race and Responsibility in American Life (W.W. Norton, 1997) won the 1997 American Book Award. He is currently completing editorial work on The Oxford Anthology of African American Social and Political Thought, scheduled for publication in 2003. Mary Frances Berry University of Pennsylvania In 1980, Dr. Berry was appointed by President Carter and confirmed by the Senate as a Commissioner on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights After President Reagan fired her for criticizing his civil rights policies, she sued him and won reinstatement in federal district court. In 1993, President Clinton designated her Chairperson of the Civil Rights Commission.
