Extractions: Anani Dzidzienyo , Afro-American Studies and Portuguese-Brazilian Studies, Brown University At the turn of the twentieth century, the popular image of Brazil was that of a tropical utopia for people of color, and it was looked upon as a beacon of hope by African Americans. Reports of this racial paradise were affirmed by notable black observers until the middle of this century, when the myth began to be challenged by North American blacks whose attitudes were influenced by the civil rights movement and burgeoning black militancy. The debate continued and the myth of the racial paradise was eventually rejected as black Americans began to see the contradictions of Brazilian society as well as the dangers for people of color. David Hellwig has assembled numerous observations of race relations in Brazil from the first decade of the century through the 1980s. Originally published in newspapers and magazines, the selected commentaries are written by a wide range of African-American scholars, journalists, and educators, and are addressed to a general audience.

Extractions: John Freeman Robert Zemeckis' 1994 release Forrest Gump was widely acclaimed by the critics, receiving flattering reviews and three academy awards upon its release. One reviewer writes, "The main character remains a child in heart in spirit, even as his body grows to maturity. Hanks is called upon yet again to play the innocent" (Berardinelli, 1). This was the typical reception of Forrest Gump: innocent entertainment that provides a comprehensive historical background of the 1960's and 70's. These light-hearted mechanizations, as we will see, are exactly where the movie's racist and insidious ideologies are most effective. I might pose the question to Berardinelli, "What is so innocent about Forrest Gump?" We must look no further than the character's namesake, General Nathan Bedford Forrest, founder of the Ku Klux Klan, to see why such a read is so limiting. The film's most overt attack on blackness comes in the form of a familiar friend to the Hollywood audience, the Sambo. When Forrest goes to his boot camp to prepare for the Vietnam War, he immediately befriends an African American young man named Bubba, played by Mykelti Williamson. Bubba operates on a few different levels in the film, from playing the comical sidekick to Forrest, to playing the effeminate virginal character in the completion of the generic demands of the romance. By having such a buffoonish white protagonist at the forefront of his movie, Zemeckis has largely avoided criticism concerning his representation of race. However, if we view Bubba and Forrest as racial correlatives, disharmonies in the manner that Zemeckis represents these two characters become quite visible.
