Extractions: Born to former slaves in 1872 in Dayton, Ohio, Paul Laurence Dunbar became the first African-American to gain national eminence as a poet. Though he died at the age of 33, Dunbar penned a large body of dialect poems, standard English poems, essays, novels, and short stories. His work often addressed the difficulties encountered by members of his race and the efforts of African-Americans to achieve quality in America. Inspired by his mother Matilda, who had learned to read by listening to her slave master read poetry, Dunbar began writing poetry at the age of six. He was the only black child at Dayton Central High School but was a member of the debating society, editor of the school paper, and president of the school's literary society. After graduating he worked as an elevator operator (one of the few jobs he was able to get because of his race) until he established the Dayton Tattler, a black-oriented newsletter he published with the financial backing of the Wright brothers. He published his first book of poetry

This brief introduction to the careers and achievements represents only a small number of the remakable African American men and women who have passed through Penn's doors. We are indebted to former University Archivist Francis James Dallett who conducted much of the initial research on the University's early black alumni in preparation for the major 1980-1981 exhibit, "A Century of Black Presence at the University of Pennsylvania, 1879-1980." His work, supported by a grant for the Public Committee for the Humanities in Pennsylvania, provided the foundation for the University Archives' "Blacks at Penn Collection." The University Archives welcomes inquiries about these and other African American alumni, faculty, trustees, and honorary degree recipients.
