It is dedicated to the production of creative research on the achievements of African Americans and to exciting instruction for a diverse community of thinkers. Extractions: The Department of Afro-American Studies offers a graduate program in the field of African American Studies. The aim of this program is to combine an interdisciplinary training in African American cultural and social studies with a focus in a major disciplinary field, leading to the PhD in African American Studies. The program admits four or five students a year into a five- to six-year program. While there are no specific prerequisites, typically students either have undergraduate majors in African American Studies, or have majors in fields such as anthropology, comparative literature, English, history, history of art, music, philosophy, sociology, and religious studies, and have done some undergraduate work in the field of African American studies. The fundamental rationale for the program is that there now exists a substantial body of scholarly writing on African American social, cultural, economic and political life and history, conducted by scholars with a primary training in a traditional discipline, who have drawn on the work of colleagues in other fields to enrich their work. This interdisciplinary corpus of scholarship is at the core of African American Studies, and most serious work on African American literature, history, culture and social, economic or political life, proceeds with an awareness of this interdisciplinary background. There is, as a result, a fairly substantial tradition of writings and a lexicon of ideas that together define a core of knowledge in the field. Familiarity with this core at the graduate level is an important part of the training of those who work on these topics.

Extractions: University of Houston Visiting Scholars Program The African American Studies Program at the University of Houston is soliciting applications for its Visiting Scholars Initiative for the 2003-2004 academic year. Applications are sought from junior scholars in the academic disciplines of: African American Studies; social sciences; and the humanities. Applicants doctoral degree must have been completed after 1997. The Visiting Scholars Initiative is designed to generate research about the African American community and attract scholars who may be interested in assuming a tenure-track position at the University of Houston subsequent to their residencies as Visiting Scholars. Research concerning the African American community in Houston and the State of Texas is particularly encouraged. The Visiting Scholar will receive a salary appropriate to rank and will be provided administrative support. Scholars are required to teach one three-credit hour class in African American Studies, within their first semester at UH. Additionally, the Visiting Scholars will be required to be in residence at the University of Houston for the academic year of 2003-2004. Also, Visiting Scholars are required to make two presentations on their research projects. The African American Studies Program, will provide assistance to Visiting Scholars, concerning interest in advancing their projects to publication. Equally important, Visiting Scholars must acknowledge support of AAS and UH in any publications that result from their appointment at UH.
