Some of these sessions may last well into the night or several days until the community feels satisfied in spirit. These are some of the reasons I love African Dance. It is an art form that brings people together. My teachings are based on dance and music from the Old Mali Empire; With a focus on, Mali, Senegal, The Gambia and Guinea. The name "Utamaduni", a swahili word meaning "culture", was adopted by the dance troupe after a Danish cultural exchange with the Sukuma tribe in Tanzania in 1977. The exchange project in which the Danes also performed their traditional dance, was called "Daraja la Utamaduni" / "The cultural bridge". From that embryonic beginning of cultural exchange, rich and fertile images of African culture were absorbed by the "Danes" - all thanks to the Sukuma people. Since then Utamaduni has woven a tapestry of dance, drum, and song rhythms into a bond of friendship with local farmers and handicraft artists, and has inspired more than 25 Danish dance troupes that meet weekly for dance and workshops. Every year we arrange a gathering for people with interest in african culture, music and dance. We are 4-500 people who meet in the forest of Ramten Skov every year in week number 30, since 17 years now! The Utamaduni Dance Troupe brings alive Africa, right here on the spot, with its colorful and expressive performance.

The rich tradition of African dance is explored through movement, rhythm and songs. The dances of West Africa include Goombey, a harvest dance, Lambaan, a dance of celebration, Sunu, a wedding dance and Manjani, Jon Don, and Wolosodon. The Can dance and the Boot dance are traditional dances from South Africa which illustrate a way of creating music from what is available. These dances were created by the workers in the mines who made music with their empty cans and danced in their work boots during break times. The Boot dance is linked to the stepping dance found in some of today's fraternities and sororities. Traditional African music and dance were interwoven into everyday life. This healing art form energizes the body, motivates the mind, and lifts the spirit.
