Historically the term refers to the languages of sub-Saharan Africa, which do not belong to a single family, but are divided among several distinct linguistic stocks. It is estimated that more than 800 languages are spoken in Africa; however, they belong to comparatively few language families.     Extractions: African Languages Lexicon Project (ALLEX) Description "The African Language Lexicon Project (ALLEX) emerged in conjunction with the Standard Shona Corpus. The Corpus was created as a source in the development of the Shona Dictionary, which also will draw on previous dictionaries such as Hannan's Standard Shona Corpus and Duramazwi's A Shona : English Dictionary . ALLEX involves researchers at the universities of Zimbabwe, Gothenburg, and Oslo, and the Norwegian Documentation Project. The project uses the TEI customizations that were prepared for the LE-Parole project as its starting point. Additional adjustments have been made in order to cover oral material. The project began in 1992. The first phase was financed by the Norwegian Universities' Committee for Development Research and Education (NUFU) through the University of Oslo, and the Swedish Development Agency (SIDA) in Sweden, through the University of Gothenburg. The second phase of the project is financed by the same institutions, but NUFU in Norway is the major partner.

The disagreement is due in part to the sometimes difficult classification of "a language" vs. "a dialect" and in part due to the continuing need for linguistic research on the continent. There are an estimated 2,000 distinct languages and an additional 8,000 or so dialects spoken in Africa. The languages of Africa can be grouped into 6 major linguistic families. Each has a different history and geographic distribution on the continent. The four major families of AFRO-ASIATIC, NILO-SAHARAN, KHOISAN, and NIGER-CONGO are indicated on the map. Below the map, there are tables for each of these families, indicating the major branches within the family and listing some examples of languages that fall under the classification. Two other major language families have representation in Africa: AUSTRONESIAN and INDO-EUROPEAN. Malagasy is an Austronesian language spoken on the island of Madagascar. Indo-European languages such as English, French, Gujarati, Hindi, and Portuguese are spoken throughout Africa. Swahili , first language of the Swahili people of coastal East Africa, is also the most widely used lingua franca on the African continent. The program is designed to promote a thorough grounding in all skill areas - speaking, listening, reading, and writing - with an emphasis on oral proficiency. It therefore serves the needs of those who plan to visit East and Central African countries for travel or field research or who wish to acquire conversational ability for any other reason. The program consists of two three-week modules, each carrying four credits. Each module involves four hours a day of class time plus four hours a week of laboratory work.
