Extractions: Beetle banks, a regenerated orchard and areas specially seeded for wild birds feature in plans to extend our environmentally friendly farmland. A new DEFRA Countryside Stewardship scheme, launched in October, will see more areas of our 180 hectare farm cultivated specially for wildlife. The ten-year agreement, drawn up after close liaison with the on-site Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG), will further benefit birds and insects which are becoming at risk from modern practices. The new proposals include: Four hectares of overwintered stubble will be lightly cultivated in spring and then left fallow over summer. This will allow ground nesting birds like larks and lapwings to raise their broods safely. Small areas totalling 3.3 hectares will be seeded with wild bird and pollen mixtures, increasing food for birds and insects.

However, San Joaquin County UC Cooperative Extension farm advisor Gary Hickman discovered recently that commercial products containing 8% and 4% mint oil were not effective ant repellents. To test the products, Hickman put pieces of hotdog in cups treated with the mint oil products and left them near ant colonies. Four hours after treatment, the ant infestation on the treated and untreated cups was statistically the same. Hickman also studied vinegar and lemon juice, other household foodstuffs commonly thought to repel ants.

Extractions: NOVEMBER 1999 FROM: Norman Harrell, Agricultural Extension Agent Standard Commercial Tobacco Company in conjuncture with the Wilson County Cooperative Extension Service will again be sponsoring a tobacco award for Wilson County farmers. The award will recognize a flue-cured tobacco farmer who does an outstanding job of growing quality tobacco and makes contributions to tobacco and community affairs. Eligibility requirements for the award are simple. All active farmers who grow tobacco in Wilson County are eligible, irrespective of race, color, religion, sex, or handicap. The winner will be selected by a panel representing the tobacco farming industry. Consideration will be given to tobacco production (yield, quality, agronomic practices) and community involvement and service. The farmer selected as the winner is ineligible for future competition. The winner will receive a cash prize and a plaque that will be awarded at the annual Young Farmers Award banquet in February. All interested tobacco farmers should call me (237-0111) at the Agricultural Center to request an application or drop by and pick one up. The deadline for the application to be returned is January 1, 2000. The 1999 Small Grain Production Guides and the Official Variety Test booklets are available at the Ag. Center. Call me and let me know if you would like one or stop by and pick one up.

As states have been certified to take over and operate the NPDES program, they have treated the 1,000 animal unit threshold in different ways. NEWS-NOTES will, from time to time, report on some of the ways that states are regulating concentrated animal feeding operations. This first report deals with the State of Minnesota.] The Minnesota Feedlot Permit Program grew out of the realization that livestock and poultry wastes can and do create significant pollution problems if not managed properly and, in fact, predates the Clean Water Act and its NPDES program. Minnesota requires a permit to operate a feedlot for more than 10 animal units. The Program was first established in 1971 and its rules were revised in 1974 and 1979. They currently mandate that "No animal feedlot or manure storage area shall be constructed, located, or operated so as to create a potential pollution hazard unless a certificate of compliance or an agency permit has been issued." The rules require the owner of an animal feedlot to obtain a permit when any of the following conditions exist:

When the McDermotts, originally from Seattle, Washington decided to pack up an move to the Bemidji, Minnesota area they envisioned a healthier, more wholesome way of life for their family. They knew their calling was to raise their kids, Scottish Highland cattle and Arabian horses in the Great Northwoods. The first thing the McDermott's saw upon their arrival to the place of their future home was the statue of Paul and Babe on the shores of Lake Bemidji. They knew at that moment that "Babe", of Paul Bunyan fame, was nothing other than a Scottish Highland bull. The McDermott's knew at that moment, their farm's name needed to be 'Blue Ox Farm'. In 1995, The U.S. Postal Service Came to Bemidji, Minnesota to commemorate the Paul Bunyan Folk Lore Stamp series. The City sponsored a "Paul Bunyan Look-A-Like" contest for the event. Our Bull "BOF Resurrector" was the only entrant for "Babe". From this point on, Res's stage name became "Babe", Bemidji's Official Living Legend. This picture appeared in a local newspaper; and was subsequently voted as the Picture of the Year.
