Extractions: Plant protection is the management of insects, weeds, and diseases that affect agronomic and horticultural crops, reducing their productivity or aesthetic value. This interdepartmental major captures important concepts and practices from entomology, plant pathology and weed sciences within the context of biological interactions in natural and managed ecosystems easing food demands for a larger world population, protection of people and environments, and changing crop production philosophies make effective management of pests a critical career field for the future. The Plant Protection major is designed to train practicing professionals who are directly involved with pest management, who consult and advise others in management practices, or who work with businesses that are impacted by pest problems Supporting course work within the major offers specialized training in either agronomic or horticultural crop production and protection. General education courses provide important background so that graduates of the program can be informed, contributing members of their communities. The plant protection curriculum was developed in consultation with practicing professionals who understand the needs and demands of their professions. Many of these practicing professionals will employ graduates of the program. Employment opportunities are excellent and include jobs with private agribusinesses, extension, consulting companies and with local, national, and international governmental agencies. The curriculum is also designed to encourage entrepreneurs who wish to establish businesses in their local communities. A required paid summer internship provides relevant on-thejob experience and professional contacts which are important in employment searches. Graduates of the program will have completed most of the requirements for ARCPACS national certification. Since the Plant Protection faculty maintain a continuing dialogue with practicing professionals, they can assist in job searches and placement.

Sitz (231-6315) The bachelor of science in biochemistry is designed to provide students with a thorough foundation in chemistry and biology and an appreciation of how these sciences are integrated. The plan of study prepares students for careers in medical, veterinary, agricultural, industrial biochemistry, or biotechnology. In addition, it provides the background for post-graduate studies in the life sciences or professional studies in medicine (including nursing), veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or clinical chemistry.
