Extractions: Denver, otherwise known as the "Mile-High City," may be a big city in fact, it's the largest city in the Rockies but it doesn't feel big. That's the beauty of this city secondary, of course, to its surrounding beauty, the stunning snowcaps that treat residents to literal candy store of ski resort options. Copper Mountain, Keystone, and Winter Park are three of the closest resorts to Denver; a short drive away, you'll find many others located in a chain that gives skiers the option of choosing larger resorts with more trails and nightlife, or low-traffic, quieter resorts. Contrary to many other Colorado cities and towns, which still have several architectural relics of the past alongside new buildings, downtown Denver is made up predominantly of skyscrapers and modern structures. A mad rush for urban development during the 1970s and 1980s resulted in the destruction of the last vestiges of Denver's past.

Constructed in 1888, this former bakery is recognized as Tempe's oldest fired red brick building. It was the focus of a 10-year restoration project coinciding with the country's bicentennial, and helped reawaken interest in local landmarks and history. Nowadays, it houses an area organization that fosters international relations and hosts community activities. A gift shop on the premises sells Southwestern crafts and carries items with local interest.
Airport Engineer Elder recognized as airport Engineer of the year MADISON, WI http://www.meadandhunt.com/News/elder.html
Extractions: The award is given annually to the individual who made the most outstanding contribution in the area of airport engineering and/or architecture during the previous year. Elder was recognized for his work on Runway 3/21 at Dane County Regional Airport, the largest civil aviation project of its kind ever undertaken in the state of Wisconsin. ``Dave has performed the design and construction of Runway 3/21 brilliantly while under intense time and budget pressures," says Peter Drahn, Dane County Regional Airport Director and Chairman of the American Association of Airport Executives. ``He is innovative, focused, and has the unique ability to focus the energies of numerous independent parties to complete the job before him." The project included complicated environmental and soil issues; significant elevation changes among existing airfield pavements, a bordering highway, and terrain northeast of the airport; and an extremely tight budget resulting from uncertain federal and state funding. Typically a project of this complexity and magnitude would take more than a year to design. By working nights, weekends, and holidays, Elder completed the design in only four months.

It is a natural basin caused by erosion of a volcanic intrusion resulting in particularly fertile soil, which has sustained grassland farming for over 270 years. On this land, man has built homes and dependencies which represent a continuum of rural Virginia vernacular architecture, respectful of location and scene, preserved virtually unaltered in its original context, where the land has been enhanced rather than despoiled by the presence of man. Extractions: We left July 22, 2001 for Buffalo, New York to see Niagara Falls. We immediately rented a car, and drove to Niagara, Ontario to see the falls from the Canadian side, and to sample the "Casino Niagara" as well. We saw the sights, and Susan scored on a slot machine before we left (don't get too excited... $100 in Canadian money is not the same as U.S. money!). See our Niagra Pictures We then drove across upstate New York from Buffalo to Albany (the capital) to see the sights. We drove the smaller highways to get a feel for the natural New York countryside. We saw lots of agriculture, waterfalls, and finger lake sights. It was thoroughly enjoyable. The town of Ithica, home to Cornell University and Ithica College, was partucularly beautiful, as were the sights along the banks of the finger lakes. Nauganook Falls was a postcard perfect scene I felt priveledged to see. See our agricultural and Women's Hall of Fame pictures We stopped at "Turning Stone" Indian Casino outside of Oneida, New York, but other than the beautiful flowers and greenery, were not impressed with their casino games. One bright spot though was the discovery of a new-to-us game called "SIC-BO" which deals with estimating the possible faces on 3 dice that are shaken in a canister then presented. We enjoyed learning that game. See our Finger Lake and Turning Stone pictures When we arrived in Albany, we drove directly to the downtown area to see the state office buildings. I was originally confused as to which building was which, mistaking the wrong building for the Capitol. After we were straightened out, I set about photographing the different locations, and exploring this most historical capital. Their Department of Education building was huge, with dozens of ionic pillars surrounding it like the Lincoln Memorial in D.C. Its architecture was unique to downtown Albany. We were off again after about a 3 hour visit.

Extractions: TEXAS BUSINESS REVIEW Bureau of Business Research College and Graduate School of Business The University of Texas at Austin June 1999 The Regional Economic Impact of New Airport Construction: The Case of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Elsie L. Echeverri-Carroll, Ph.D. Head, Economic Development Program Bureau of Business Research University of Texas at Austin In the late 1980s it became apparent that Austins Robert Mueller Municipal Airport would not be equal to the demands generated by the growth of the city surrounding it. The dynamic increases in cargo and passengers increasingly taxed the capacity of the aging Mueller facility. Consequently, in September 1993, more than sixty years after Mueller opened, Austin voters approved $400 million in revenue bonds to build a new airport at the site of Bergstrom Air Force Base. The 1991 decision by Congress to close the base had created an opportunity to build a new airport to meet the needs of a booming Austin. The $585 million Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA), the largest construction project in the citys history, opened for cargo operations in 1997 and began passenger operations in 1999. ABIA provides a strong example of the immediate economic benefits and pressing policy issues that accompany large infrastructure projects, such as the building of a new airport. Economic Benefits Several kinds of measurable economic benefits accrue with a new airport. First, the construction of such a large project significantly increases the volume of employmentdirect and indirectin an area. The ABIA construction program included everything from demolition and utilities installation to terminal construction and high-tech information systems installation. Direct employment was created at engineering, architecture, CAD, and surveyor companies. As important, some of the growth in employment resulted from the emergence of new small companies, such as DAVCAR Engineers. These companies, in turn, buy goods and services from other local companies, which must then increase their employment to meet the expanded demand for their goods. City of Austin estimates show that 11,299 new jobs were generated in the construction of the airport in 1998. Approximately 50 percent of these jobs represent direct employment.
