Extractions: JUST FOR PARENTS AIDB gives students the experience of a fine private boarding school, at no cost to Alabama residents. For students of all abilities, boarding schools offer a unique experience. Learning is never limited to the classroom, or to a seven-hour academic day. When students share a living environment around the clock with friends, teachers, coaches and mentors, they learn that diversity is the key to building a strong community, and that each person has something valuable to contribute. In addition, a residential school environment for students who are deaf, blind or multidisabled gives them an unparalleled opportunity to interact and compete with their peers. Here on our campuses, students compete for a spot on the cheerleading team, the track team, the football team. They are just as likely to win a title in a pageant as any other student. Being differently-abled doesn't make them different here. They are surrounded by their peers, and for young people, that is a critical ingredient for building self-esteem. It's only natural for you to have a thousand questions about the place your child will live for nine months out of every year. To help put your mind at ease, we've tried to answer some of the more common questions here. If there's anything else you need to know, check the student/parent handbook, or call us.

Extractions: ABIGAIL KLEIN LEICHMAN Correspondent Standing in a vast muddy field in Greensboro, N.C., in the summer of 2001, 15-year-old Goldie Wylen imagined the 100 acres filled with modern classroom buildings and decided on the spot that this was where she wanted to go to high school. "I looked at Goldie's face and saw her grin from ear to ear and that's when I knew she was really a halutz [a pioneer]," said her father, Rabbi Stephen Wylen of Wayne's Temple Beth Tikvah. Goldie was among the charter students at the American Hebrew Academy when it opened that September with 77 ninth-graders and a few 10th-graders from 20 states. One of the other "pioneers" was also a local resident, Jesse Kornbluth of Englewood. With all the Jewish schools that dot the New York metropolitan area, why go to Greensboro? For many parents, it's because this one-of-a-kind institution aims to educate young adults from every stream of Judaism. "In the Orthodox world a lot of kids go to boarding yeshivas," said Wylen, "but in my [Reform] world they go to Episcopalian boarding schools [for the superior academics]. Here it combines both aspects."
