Extractions: Due to unwarranted public criticism, the future of higher education is being threatened. Through reduced appropriations and misrepresentations, the jobs of faculty and staff in Alabama's universities are being challenged. The Higher Education Partnership provides you a means of addressing this challenge. The time is now to take a stand and support this Partnership. THE TIME IS NOW... Why Take a Stand? The Reason: Instead of being applauded for their work, Alabama's universities are forced to fight to prevent appropriations from being reduced, facilities from being closed and accomplishments from being overlooked. The result of the reduced support for higher education is catastrophic for our state. Fewer of our citizens will have the opportunity to prepare for competition in the world's changing economy.
Concordia College - Selma, Alabama: General Information 1, 1981, the name of the institution was changed from alabama Lutheran Academy interests, goals, and ages so they may receive both a general education as well http://www.concordiaselma.edu/general.htm
Extractions: Concordia College, formerly known as Alabama Lutheran Academy and Junior College, is the direct result of the pioneer Lutheran missionaries in Alabama. In 1916 Miss Rosa Young, supremely concerned about the spiritual and educational welfare of the Black people in her native area, directed a plea for help to the Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America. The conference responded favorably and sent the Rev. Nils Jules Bakke, who on Palm Sunday in 1916 performed 58 Baptisms and 70 confirmations in Rosebud, Alabama. Within a few years, more than 20 congregations were founded. In 1919 at a conference held in Midway, near Miller's Ferry, a resolution was adopted to petition the Synodical Conference for funds to build a school for the special purpose of training professional church workers. The location selected for the new school was Selma. The first classed were conducted in a rented cattage at 521 First Avenue, November 13, 1922. The Rev. R. O. Lynn was the first president. The first buildings on the present campus were dedicated by the Director of Missions, C. F. Drewes on September 20, 1925. One year later four females made up the school's first graduating class. God continued to bless this new Alabama school with capable leaders like Pres. Edward Wescott, who, in a long period of dedicated service to the school, made survival possible during the Great Depression.

George Wallace, Gubernatorial History Interest from the alabama Trust Fund will be pumped into the general Fundwhich finances all noneducation segments of state government. http://www.archives.state.al.us/govs_list/g_wallac.html
Extractions: George Wallace's "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door" speech Following a brief period in the U.S. Air Force (Wallace received a medical discharge), he returned to Alabama where he served as an assistant attorney general for the state. In 1947, running as a candidate from Barbour County, George Wallace was elected to the state legislature. His legislative tenure was quite productive. Among the highlights were several Wallace-sponsored bills which greatly enhanced Alabama's industrial environment by attracting more than one hundred industries into the state and the GI and Dependents Scholarships Act which provided college and trade school tuition to children and widows of war casualties. Wallace was elected judge in the Third Judicial Circuit in 1953, a position he held until 1959, During subsequent years he also served the Democratic party in many capacities. (Moritz, p.454) In 1958, Wallace formally entered the governor's race and received more than a quarter million votes placing second in the primary to John Patterson. Patterson ran strong on the racial issue and accepted the support of the Ku Klux Klan; Wallace refused it. Wallace thereupon received the endorsement of the NAACP. In the run-off, Patterson defeated him by over 64,000 votes. This devastating loss forced Wallace to significantly adapt his socio-political ideologies to appeal to the state's voters. (Stewart, p. 214) Following his devastating defeat to Patterson, Wallace resumed his legal duties all the while forming a plan to achieve his goal - the governor's office. Wallace's views on race relations and segregation underwent a drastic metamorphosis following the defeat. By the primary of 1962, Wallace defeated his mentor Folsom, among others, and in the run-off he defeated the rising young politician Ryan DeGraffenried. In the general election of November, Wallace polled the largest vote ever given a gubernatorial candidate in Alabama up to that time. (Stewart, p. 214).
