Extractions: Wheeler Reservoir Wheeler Reservoir is located in north central Alabama half way between Birmingham and Nashville. Alabama's second largest is one of TVA's lakes and stretches 60 miles from Guntersville Dam to Wheeler Dam near Rogersville. The upper end of the reservoir is a run-of-the-river reservoir as it goes past Huntsville and begins spreading out near Decatur. Stump flats, weed beds, and creek channels are popular locations in the middle section. The lower end has many steep banks and long points. Bass fishing is the most popular fishery in Wheeler Reservoir. Largemouth bass are the primary species, but smallmouth bass are common from Decatur to the west end, especially from Elk River down. The northern strain of spotted bass are common too, and are primarily near the main channel. This reservoir is home to quality fishing for a variety of fish. Catfish fishing is excellent, and William McKinley caught the world record blue catfish, 111 pounds, from Wheeler Reservoir on July 5, 1996. Bream (bluegill, redear sunfish, and longear sunfish) fishing is excellent, also. Crappie grow exceptionally fast here. Sauger run upstream during the winter and early spring and are caught below Guntersville Dam. Striped bass, hybrids and white bass make spring runs too and can be caught schooling during the summer. Link list: Fishing license information may be found at: www.dcnr.state.al.us/agfd/fishlic.html
Fishing Lake Guntersville In North Alabama, Link Page For Anglers are listed at www.dcnr.state.al.us/agfd/rsv.html The Geological Survey of Alabamahas interactive maps showing the locations of boat ramps at www.gsa.state.al http://www.dcnr.state.al.us/agfd/fish/lake/guntersville.html
Extractions: Link Page for Anglers Lake Guntersville is located in north Alabama between Bridgeport and Guntersville. Alabama's largest lake contains 69,100 acres and stretches 75 miles from Nickajack Dam to Guntersville Dam. Free boat ramps and private marinas are spread along its length. Fishing, boating, camping, hunting and eagle watching are popular sports in the area. Eagle watching is centered on Guntersville State Park and the dam during the winter, though some stay all year. Guntersville is noted for its milfoil and hydilla weed beds from which big bass explode on topwater baits. Lake Guntersville is home to quality angling for a variety of fish. Historically, about two-thirds of the anglers on Guntersville target largemouth bass, although bream (bluegill, redear sunfish, and longear sunfish) crappie, sauger and catfish attract their fair share of anglers. A 15-inch minimum length limit was placed on black bass on October 1, 1993 to increase the abundance of bass and increase the numbers of bass longer than 15-inches. There has not been any major shifts or adverse effects on the black bass fishery since the implementation of the limit; however, the vast majority of anglers remain supportive of the length limit. A summary of bass club tournament data last year on Guntersville is available.
