You've graduated from high school and now you're leaving Alaska to continue your education. This brochure is especially for you. You've probably sailed through the application process in the past. But now that you're living outside the state, every year we'll look at your application more closely . If you don't fill out your PFD application carefully and completely, or you fail to answer our request for additional information, you stand a good chance of having your dividend delayed, or even worse, having your dividend denied. Reading and understanding the following tips and guidelines should help you maintain your eligibility. Attendance at School . If your school charges non-residents a different tuition from what it charges its state residents, you must be paying out-of-state tuition in order to remain qualified for the dividend. Each year, the school's registrar must verify your enrollment, whether there is a distinction in tuition, and what type of tuition you are paying.

The board members reviewed and discussed some major changes and encouraged public participation in the budgetary process. The $7,212,700 budget was presented in a new format that allows the public to review it item by item. For example, if a parent wanted to know how much the textbooks for fourth grade science cost, that would be in the budget. The administrator for each school was given the daunting task of justifying every dollar spent in their school. The main items asked for in the budget are either for instruction or for building maintenance. In the area of maintenance, Nome Public School Systems have asked for 11 percent above state standards for maintenance costs due to rougher weather conditions and high traffic wear and tear on the buildings. Considering that there is only one junior/senior high school and one elementary school, there will be a considerable amount of wear with the larger student population. Even though the schools do get some assistance from the city, it is still not enough to cover the high cost of maintenance. Staff salaries and benefits make up 81 percent of the proposed budget, also included in the proposed budget are support staff for the elementary school and a dean of students for the junior/senior high school.

In 1974 parents of Alaska Native and American Indian students enrolled in the FNSBSD applied for and were awarded an Indian Education Title V, Part C (PL 100-297) grant to create the Alaska Native Education (ANE) Program. The program is governed by the ANE Parent Committee, as required by the Office of Indian Education under the grant. In the beginning ANE funds were utilized to address the academic needs of ANE students through the development and dissemination of culturally relevant curriculum to the district's teachers. Although the materials created were excellent, they were not enough to address low graduation and poor attendance rates. After parent input and review of student records, the program evolved and expanded in the 1980s to provide more direct ANE student services such as academic tutoring, attendance monitoring, cultural activities, and paraprofessional career and personal advising.

Extractions: The World's Biomes, provided by the University California Berkeley's Museum of Paleontology, is an introduction to the earth's ecological regions. Biomes are the world's ecological communities, distinguishable by their predominant vegetation and by the organisms that have adapted to that vegetation. This site provides an introduction to the environmental and ecological features typical of various aquatic, desert, forest, grassland, and tundra biomes. Users can read about the planet's ecosystems, including information on the weather conditions, as well as the geological and soil conditions, that allow different biomes to flourish.
