The Strangest Town In Alaska - Published By Kokogiak Media Sample chapter from the book, The Strangest Town in alaska, the History of Whittier, alaska and the Portage Valley , historic photos, maps, interactive panoramic image, and links for visitors. http://www.kokogiak.com/strangetown
Extractions: A city barely 50 years old that had no road access for its first 50 years. A city where 90% of the population lives in a single building. A city of stark contrast, drab concrete buildings nestled within the beauty of Prince William Sound. A city built to house 30,000 (in an emergency) in two of the largest structures in Alaska, yet only 300 people live there now. W hittier sits at a fascinating historical crossroads, traveled for hundreds of years by natives, traders, explorers, gold rushers, the U.S. military, and now visitors from all over the world. The area surrounding Whittier and Portage pass had significant roles in the expansion of Russian America, the Alaskan Gold Rush, World War II, and the Great Alaskan Earthquake of 1964. The Strangest Town in Alaska chronicles the events that shaped Whittier and Portage Valley, and looks ahead toward new events that hold great promise, including a unique road system that has only now opened the doors to Whittier. Extractions: Under Construction Under Construction Under Construction Abstract of Cook Inlet Marine Ice Atlas Cook Inlet is a 350-km-long estuary located in South-Central Alaska. Approximately half the population of Alaska resides near its shores. Anchorage, situated near its northern end is the states largest city and a major center of commerce, industry, recreation, and transportation. Shipping routes in Cook Inlet serve year-round oil and natural gas production in central Cook Inlet as well as the importation of consumer goods and petroleum products to the Port of Anchorage. The port supports 80% of Alaskas population and its four largest military bases. The marine ice environment of Cook Inlet is unique. Tidal height variations at Anchorage are the second most extreme in the world. At 9 meters, they are exceeded only by those in eastern Canadas Bay of Fundy. The extreme tidal range and the generally shallow nature of Cook Inlet produce extreme tidal currents. Maximum flows are typically as high as 4 knots and have on occasion been reported up to 8 knots. These bathymetric and oceanographic factors in combination with the winter climate, result in the production of large quantities of marine ice in the Inlet. This ice can impact navigation and mineral operation for substantial periods each year. The Cook Inlet Marine Ice Atlas (25 mb *.pdf file) includes a report of the Inlets physiography. It presents the results of a quantitative and qualitative GIS analysis of the ice regime. The climatic and oceanographic aspects of the region that are relevant to ice processes in the inlet are given detailed exposition as well.

This means we paid about 7 million dollars for a land mass of nearly 365 million acres!! Alaska is known for its natural beauty, boasting 8 national parks. Tourism is the main industry, although oil refining pumps millions of dollars into the economy every year. Located in the southwest portion Alaska, Katmai National Park is home to 15 active volcanoes and over 700 Alaskan brown bears. Katmai is the site of one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recorded history. In 1912, a volcano erupted with over 10 times more force than Mt. St. Helens. This explosion formed a major valley of volcanic pressures, now labeled the "Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes." The capital city of Alaska, Juneau has a population of only just over 30.000 people. Juneau is located in the extreme southeastern part of the state, directly south of the Yukon Territory in Canada. The main industries in juneau are tourism, fishing, mining, and logging.
