The Illyrians were not a uniform body of people but a conglomeration of many tribes that inhabited the western part of the Balkans, from what is now Slovenia in the northwest to (and including) the region of Epirus, which extends about halfway down the mainland of modern Greece. Anscombe , American University in Bulgaria. Everything Started with Kosovo "Everything started with Kosovo, and everything will finish with Kosovo." The truth of this quotation about the breakup of Yugoslavia, which Miranda Vickers uses as the title of her book's last chapter, is beginning to be recognized around the world. Among the many problems plaguing the Balkans today, Kosovo is the "Stealth Bomber": until now it has shown up on the radar screens of very few people outside the region, but it carries the potential to demolish the current international order of the peninsula. Now that this potential is belatedly being recognized, various governments are scrambling to find effective means to neutralize the threat, but most of their schemes sound like wishful thinking, at best. And, like the U.S. Air Force's Stealth Bomber, the Kosovo problem took an awfully long time to develop. Vickers attempts to walk her readers through the history of that development. Given the popular interest in (and even greater ignorance about) Kosovo and the rest of the Balkans, there should be a ready audience for her book. Since opposing Serbian and Albanian views of the region's history are key elements in the conflict, a clear, critical account by an impartial observer would be of great help to anyone interested in the problem and in its eventual just solution. A timely book for adding a modicum of depth to understanding the latest "crise du jour," with a clear-eyed approach exhibiting skepticism about both Serb and Alabanian claims. Ms Vickers has no sympathy for the oversimplified "politically correct" western carricature of evil Serbs versus meek and oppressed ethnic Albanians. She provides important descriptions of the Albanian leadership debates between advocates of peaceful accommodation versus those who believe in shooting their way out of Yugoslavia. Interestingly, many of the so-called "Kosovo Liberation Army" guerillas are former Yugoslav army officers who tasted blood killing Serbs in Bosnia, while others were trained in Iran and Pakistan. Extractions: Countries of the World Back to Albania Index Page Republic of Albania Prior to the Roman invasion in the second century BC, the present territory of Albania was home to the Illyrian tribes, an Indo-European people. After the collapse of the Roman Empire in the west, Albania came under the control of the Byzantine Empire and later of Bulgaria and Serbia. During the late 14th century, the Ottoman Turks invaded the Balkans and made repeated attempts to conquer Albania. However, fierce resistance by an alliance of Albanian Princes - led by Prince Skanderberg - held the Turks back for over twenty years. It wasn't until after Skanderberg's death in 1468 that Albania was finally incorporated into the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman rule lasted for nearly 500 years, and during this time the vast majority of the Albanian population adopted a Turkish way of life and converted to Islam. Albanian nationalism was reborn after the Russian-Turkish War of 1877-78, when the proposed peace settlement offered large parts of Albanian territory to Russia's allies in the Balkans. The Albanian League was formed to oppose any territorial division, but was crushed by Turkish troops in 1881. In 1912, the remaining part of Albania was occupied by troops from Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Montenegro during the First Balkan War. On 28 November 1912, Albania officially declared independence from the Ottoman Empire, although it was still under occupation. In 1913, Albania's independence was confirmed, although it's borders were redefined to cede significant portions of territory to Montenegro, Serbia and Greece.

Shkodra, now the most important city of northern Albania, was the capital. The Illyrians were sociable and hospitable people, much like Albanians today. They were also daring fighters and known for their bravery in war. Around eight to six century B.C., the neighboring Greeks began to create a string of colonies along the Albanian borders. Closer now to the more advanced Greeks, the Illyrians were greatly influenced and began to evolve politically and economically. Unfortunately, the evolution was hampered by what would become a continuous string of foreign attacks. Seeing Albania as a valuable entrance to the Adriatic Sea, Rome attacked and defeated the Illyrians in 229 B.C. The Romans ruled for six centuries, a time in which art and culture flourished. The Illyrians, however, resisted assimilation and allowed their language and traditions to survive. Eventually, the Roman Empire did fall, dividing Albania into halves, and allowing the Byzantine Empire to assume control. Under the rule of the Byzantines, the Illyrians suffered constant devastation by raids from the Visigoths, Huns and Ostrogoths. Once again, however, the Illyrians allowed their language to survive by resisting all attempts by their attackers at assimilation.
