    Extractions: This course examines Canada's response to the unleashing of the atom's destructive power and the intense divisions between the two superpowers with the greatest control over that power. Among issues discussed are the range of official and private citizen attitudes to nuclear and conventional warfare, the Canadian armaments industry, Canada's role in the Vietnam war, and Canadian participation in NATO and NORAD. Throughout the course, a key concern is the relationship of Canadian attitudes to nuclear and foreign-policy issues on the one hand, and Canadian views of the values informing our own society, on the other. Cartier calls this land Canada, a variant of the Huron word Kanata, which means "settlement". Beaver hats become fashionable and the fur trading industry begins in Canada. Samuel de Champlain arrives from France and settles at the Bay of Fundy. Champlain travels up the St. Lawrence River with a group of settlers and founds a fort called Habitation of Quebec. Henry Hudson is left to die by a mutinous crew who seizes his ship. First priests arrive at Quebec. Seven year Indian War ends. Champlain dies. Nova Scotia founded by Scottish poet William Alexander. Habitation is captured by the English Kirke brothers War with England ends and Quebec is returned to France. A group of French mystics arrive and found Montreal. The Iroquois defeat the Hurons and shut down fur trading on the St. Lawrence River.

    Extractions: Aboriginal people call themselves First Nations because they were the first people to settle Alberta. Archaeologists believe that the first people came to America from Asia some 20 - 30,000 years ago. They likely crossed a land bridge that once existed between Asia and Alaska. The First Nations settled the plains about 8,000 years ago. They sustained themselves by hunting the buffalo. Evidence of their activities can still be seen at Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump , which is now a World Heritage Site in southern Alberta. Later, these people - who included the Blackfoot, Blood, and Peigan - tamed horses and hunted buffalo with rifles they obtained from European explorers. During the 19th Century, European fur traders married Native women. The result was the creation of a new people unique to Canada's plains. The children of these marriages are called Métis (meaning "mixed"), and they followed a different way of life that was similar to that of the First Nations' lives.

This unit is called the Main Shaker and received its coal from the 335 metre (1100 foot) rubberised canvas conveyor belt that brought the coal down from the weigh scale at the mine’s entrance to the lower preparation plant. The shaker moved back and forth twice per second as thousands of kilograms of coal would tumble onto it. The circular holes in the screen were designed so that everything smaller than the holes would fall through to the bottom of the shaker which then climbed up 8 ½ storeys along another conveyor belt to another set of shakers over four enormous coal bins at the top of the tipple. The large “lump coal” that remained on the Main Shaker would then be loaded directly into a waiting boxcar.
