Extractions: Objective(s) By the end of this lesson the student will be able to: translate a word sentence into a mathematical expression. Pre-Class Assignment: Completion of Basic Algebra - Lesson 1 Resources/Equipment/Time Required: Outline: In the first lesson, you learned that numbers and variables form sentences, or algebraic "expressions." When you take information from a sentence and turn it into a mathematical expression, it is called "translating." A place to begin: When you write algebraic expressions, use +, -, and = signs. For division, use / , the same way you know that when you see a fraction, it means to divide the top number by the bottom number. For multiplication, write the expression with no symbol or sign between them as the X (multiplication) symbol can be confused with the variable x. For example 3 times the variable y should be written 3y. You can also use parentheses to indicate multiplication. This is especially useful in longer problems such as (3y)(4-2x). When you want to multiply something AFTER another expression has been done first, use parenthesis. For example, if you want to add x and y and THEN multiply the result by 7, write it this way: 7(x + y).
Extractions: A quick review: 1. When you write algebraic expressions, use +, -, and = signs. For division, use / , the same way you know that when you see a fraction, it means to divide the top number by the bottom number. 2. 3. When you want to multiply something AFTER another expression has been done first, use parenthesis. For example, if you want to add x and y and THEN multiply the result by 7, write it this way: 7(x + y). 4. To translate from language to a math expression, read the sentence carefully. Then decide what operations it will take to reach a solution. Write this into an algebraic expression.

Extractions: MATH RAPPING MATHTIMES TABLES GRADES: 3-6 papers with the multiplication, addition, division or subtraction facts Type or write up connecting sentences. I do the typing on one sheet so I can see the connections. eg. First Sentence would read: " Who has the answer to 7 x 7?" The next sentence would read. "I have the answer- it's 49. Who has the answer to 3 x 4?" The next sentence would read, " I have the answer- it's 12. Who has the ....." You can end the game at any time using "Who has the end? and the lucky student which "The End" on their paper is the last to read. Cut the sentences apart. ( if laminated- they can be used several times) Distribute the sentences to the kids and tell them they have to listen carefully as the are going to rap the sentences. The first child's sentence will have star on it to indicate that they go first. I like to do this activity sitting on a carpeted space where the kids are close to each other and can hear the lines read. submitted by MARY-LOU DUNNIGAN

Extractions: (Index) CONTENT: This file contains a sequence of lesson plans designed to help your students learn to solve problems logically in all subjects that use mathematics for problem solving. Grade Level: Grades 3-4 and up OBJECTIVE: Teaching logical problem solving. The lessons provide the teacher with a systematic approach to introducing logical problem solving. Examples are used to illustrate the concepts involved in logical problem solving. These concepts are introduce in a logical order starting with the most basic ideas and evolving to a complete description of the tools of logical problem solving. They are applicable in all subjects at all grade levels that use mathematics for problem solving. Procedures: (1) Regardless of grade level use the lessons in order presented starting with Lesson 1. The lessons provide students in early grades with problem solving methods which will last a life time. More advanced students can correct ineffective problem solving habits. This becomes increasingly important at the highschool and college level since inadequate problem solving habits have become firmly embedded.
