Extractions: On the occasion of the publication of L'amour, la fantasia (1985), the first translation in Slovene of a novel by Assia Djebar, the publishing house Mladinska knjiga and City of Women present the work of the Algerian author, film-director and academic. Besides a presentation of the book we will screen her film La Nouba, des femmes du Mont Chenoua (1978) at Slovenska kinoteka. The film La Nouba, des femmes du Mont Chenoua (winner of the FIPRESCI Award at the Venice Film Festival, 1978) takes its title and structure from the "Nouba", a traditional song of five movements. The film mingles narrative and documentary styles to document the creation of women's personal and cultural histories. Returning to her native region 15 years after the end of the Algerian war, Lila is obsessed by memories of the war for independence that defined her childhood. In dialogue with other Algerian women, she reflects on the differences between her life and theirs. In lyrical footage she contemplates the power of grandmothers who pass down traditions of anti-colonial resistance to their heirs. Reading the history of her country as written in the stories of women's lives, Assia Djebar's La Nouba des Femmes du Mont-Chenoua is an engrossing portrait of speech and silence, memory and creation, and a tradition where the past and present coexist.

Reviewed by Greg Noakes September/October 1994, Pages 68-69 For the last century and a half, Algeria has been a trendsetter in the Arab world. Many of the political, ideological, economic and cultural currents in 19th and 20th century Arab history have found their most extreme expression in this North African country. When much of the Middle East fell under the imperialist yoke, suffering was greatest in Algeria, which underwent 132 years of intensive French settler colonialism and the near-total suppression of indigenous Algerian society. With the era of Arab independence, Algerians waged one of the longest, and certainly the bloodiest, struggle for freedom in the region. The Algerian war of independence continued for nearly eight years and claimed over a million victims. Independent Algeria has been an international leader in non-aligned politics, a staunch supporter of the Palestinian and other national liberation struggles, a principal architect of the Arab oil embargo after the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, a leading proponent of the state capitalist economic system adopted by a number of Arab countries, and a key interlocutor between the Middle East and the West. Algeria was also one of the first Arab countries to institute a multiparty democratic system with truly free elections. Presently it is the scene of violent conflict between the secular Arab order and the rising tide of Islamism, and thus the subject of considerable international attention.

Originally falling under the influence of the powerful empires of Carthage and Rome, the nomadic Berber people who inhabited Algeria were to come under the domination of the Arabs as the Islamic conquest swept westward from Arabia under its star-and-crescent banners, reaching all the way into Spain by 711 A.D. Although they converted to Islam, the Berbers resented the arrogance and high-handedness of their Arab overlords, and embraced a dissident version of the Muslim religion that stressed the equality of all believers and the right of anyone to become caliph (ruler), not just those who could claim direct descent from the prophet Mohammed. Barbary corsairs that prowled the Mediterranean, winning it the grudging respect of its Christian European neighbours, and a series of treaties were negotiated with Holland in 1663, France in 1670, Britain in 1681, and the United States in 1815. By this time, Algeria was also the greatest wheat-producing nation in the Mediterranean region, and was exporting large amounts of grain to Europe. During the French Revolution, the government bought considerable quantities of Algerian wheat, but refused to pay for it. This situation continued during the reign of Napoleon.
