Extractions: Article 3 EARLY WOMEN IN AMERICAN CHESS by Robert John McCrary Today only a small percentage of organized chess players are women. So it may seem surprising that the history of women players in the United States can be traced almost as far back as that of male players. In fact, women chess players in the US have been found as early as the first decade of the nineteenth century. (Note that Benjamin Franklin's female opponents were European, so do not count.) According to The Book of The First American Chess Congress ,(p. 346) one of these early women players was a Mrs. Gaines, the wife of the commandant of Fort Stoddard, where Aaron Burr was detained upon his arrest. Burr reportedly played chess with her during his detainment. Four other women players are also known in that same decade of 1800-1810. They were all residents of Charleston, SC, where they had their own little playing circle. Interestingly, Paul Morphy's father and grandfather lived in Charleston at that same time, but there is no direct evidence of a connection between the Morphy family and those early women players. Perhaps the first published game by an American woman player appeared in an 8-page brochure published in 1830. The title of that brochure stated that it included a "game played by a Lady of Philadelphia with Maelzel's Automaton." This author has not seen either the brochure or the game, but the bibliographical description of the brochure implies that the game was printed in it.

Extractions: History One of the major projects undertaken by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at the time of the commemoration of its fiftieth anniversary celebration in 1940-1941 was the creation of a collection of early American manuscripts and imprints. For the fifty-year period prior to this Golden Jubilee celebration no formal collection of such material had existed at the National Society. Rather, early American manuscripts and imprints lay scattered among the holdings of the DAR Library and the DAR Museum. The nucleus of the collection formed in 1940 was material culled from the Society's own library and museum. The first home for the newly created collection was in the "Repository of Americana and Historic Documents Pertaining to the American Revolution," located on the ground level of Memorial Continental Hall in a semi-circular room under the thirteen marble pillars on the C Street side of the building. When the addition to the NSDAR Administration Building was planned later in the 1940s, provision was made for the construction of a special, climate controlled Americana Room to house the Americana Collection permanently. With a proper home and an active collecting policy, the collection has flourished. After sixty years, over 4,000 accessions compose the collection.

Extractions: The modern museum trend toward interpretive exhibitions presents both challenges and opportunities Last month in this column I stated that the Smithsonian's new National Museum of the American Indian is coping well with the three major challenges that the whole Institution faces in this era: enhancing private fundraising, dealing with controversial interpretive exhibits and providing access to its collections by electronic means. Fundraising was last month's topic. I turn here to interpretive exhibits. In times past, American Indian displays were usually grouped either by type, origin and age, or solely on the basis of esthetics. This was satisfactory for knowledgeable visitors; others, however, found such displays inadequate because no context was provided to explain the significance of the objects. This led to the placing of artifacts in a setting that gave broader meaning to the assemblage. For example, a diorama might present an American Indian structure with mannequins carrying out typical activities, using objects previously presented without context. The arrangements were organized from the perspective of curators, and rarely, if ever, of the people who made the pieces. The National Museum of the American Indian has gone much further in its initial set of exhibitions in the Custom House in New York City, looking instead at objects and history from an Indian point of view. For instance, in one exhibition, 300 pieces selected by members of different Indian tribes are presented. In labels, recordings, photographs and so forth, the selectors tell why they chose the object and its significance in the culture of the tribe. The exhibition is controversial.

The Kennedys created a "very alluring" ideal but in fact, Troy says, theirs was a loveless marriage of convenience. by Daniel McCabe Shortly after publication of his last book, See How They Ran, Gil Troy had lunch with his editor. "She wanted to know what my next book would be about," recalls Troy, an historian whose previous tome dealt with U.S. presidential elections. The conversation steered to the newly-engaged Troy's wedding plans, when the idea for the next book struck himwhy not write about presidential couples? Now married, Troy spent much of this summer putting the finishing touches on his new book and is clearly enthusiastic about his subject matter. "This might be the first book of its kind ever written," says Troy. "There are dozens of books about American first ladies and hundreds about the presidents, but no book has ever really examined how presidents and their wives work together as couples in the White House." Titled Affairs of State: The Rise and Rejection of Presidential Couples , the book will be published in January.
