America has been split apart by three major wars: in the 1770's the American Revolution; in the 1970's the Vietnam War; and, in the middle of this period, the Civil War. Each war has dramatically changed the generation engaged in battles as well as the generations that followed. Lecture #01 will examine the repercussions of the Civil War, its effects on the American people, and the agreements and disagreements within the nation over the meanings of "Reconstruction." By the late 1860s, some Southerners were already calling for a more diversified economy cotton was no longer "king." Increasingly there was a move from farm to factory, and many people encouraged industrialization in the South and an increased capital investment in the Southern economy from outside sources. This lecture explores the economic transformation and the racial politics of the "New" South after the Civil War.

Extractions: History of the Tiffin Glass Company During the early years of the 1900s, there was a gradual shift from pressed to blown tableware, in response to customers' demands. A paper label identified the glass items with the letters USG intertwined within a gold-colored shield. Commercial ware continued to be marketed under the United States Glass Company name until September 1927. After that time, household goods were identified by a gold paper label with TIFFIN superimposed on a large "T" within a shield. While other factories within the United States Glass Company were forced to close during the Great Depression of the 1930s, Factory R managed to survive. In June 1938, the offices of the United States Glass Company were transferred from Pittsburgh to Tiffin with C. W. Carlson as President. By 1940, all glassware was marked with a Tiffin label; however, the official name of the company remained the United States Glass Company through 1962. In the 1940s, three major changes took place in the use of tableware by the American public, resulting in these transitons: Crystal stemware regained its popularity over colored stemware; fewer items were produced in each stemline; and to a large degree, china replaced the use of glass tableware for table settings. Although the focus of Tiffin's production continued to be stemware, a new line of modern designs contributed to the prosperity of the Tiffin factory. In 1940, Mr. Carlson introduced the Swedish Modern line, consisting of heavy off-hand shapes. The Swedish Modern name was changed to Tiffin Modern in May 1946, to clarify that the glassware was American made. Interest in Tiffin Modern free-form designs continued into the 1960s.

People writing about soccer seem to forget the generation of young Americans exposed to the game from their immigrant fathers three decades before Peles debut in the North American Soccer League in the mid-70s. This paper is written to remind us that American soccer didnt start with Pele. My earliest soccer memories were watching my father play in the late 30s and kicking a ball in the streets with my twin brother, Jim. I remember above all the pungent smell of liniment in the changing rooms for my fathers teams-they had no locker rooms, just places to change-and hang around with Jim as our father prepared for a match with his German-Hungarian dub. The Hunkies an outstanding amateur soccer team in late 30s Philadelphia, were no different than the other ethnic clubs that dotted the Philadelphia landscape in this period. They were Scow on the Bluebelles. the First Germans, the Irish playing with the Celtics, along with union-backed teams like the Bricklayers and Hosiery Local, or corporate teams such as Bethlehem Steel and Fleischer Yarn. Ethnics dominated Philadelphia soccer, although Philadelphia nurtured a sizable number of home-grown talent.

Every so often, he finds himself answering the same question from friends in other parts of the country: "How can you still continue to teach at a Boston-area college?" "They contend Boston is the most racist city in the United States. I contend Boston is not the most racist city in the United States," says Gill, a scholar of African American history. The Secret History of American Movies" is an investigation of exploitation movies and their influence. Filmmaker Ray Greene persuasively makes a case that our past cinematic dickens, as it were, have come home to roost. "SCHLOCK!" is escapist headwork, surely destined for a cult status similar to its subject matter, and a remarkably accomplished work from a first-time filmmaker. There's no denying that ogling footage from such obscure films as "Nude on the Moon" is enough to interest fans of cinematic fringe work. But Greene and a dozen or so interviewees-from L.A. critic and screenwriter F.X. Feeney to the country's most prolific female feature director, Doris Wishman-are realistic about the artistic merits of the films in question and a little in awe of how they opened up markets the major studios subsequently co-opted. Other participants include Forrest J Ackerman, Samuel Z. Arkoff, Roger Corman, David F. Friedman, Dick Miller, Harry Novak and Maila Nurmi, who helped provoke the onslaught of lurid, gory horror flicks when she first appeared as TV movie host Vampira in 1954. Starting with 1936's "Reefer Madness," which Greene shows us has become a stage musical that adds to its reputation as the epitome of bad taste and bad filmmaking, "Schlock" covers a lot of ground.

Extractions: The first American comic book, Funnies on Parade , was a giveaway anthology reprinting comic strips from the newspapers. Wanting to get rid of undistributed copies, the story goes, someone slapped a 10 cent tag on them and dropped them off at a few newsstands. They sold out in a flash and so, in 1934, the comics industry was born. At first comics pages were filled with reprints of syndicated comic strips from the newspapers. Within a few years, though, these were replaced by original content. It was cheaper for the publishers to purchase new material from aspiring cartoonists, suffering from the effects of the Depression and desperate for any kind of work, than to buy reprint rights from the syndicates. Many early comic-book creators had no love for the medium. The pay was meager, the work grueling and usually uncredited. They worked in comic books in the hope that one day they'd "make it" and "graduate" to newspaper comic strips. Ironically, the first big comic-book hit was a feature that had been turned down for years by the comic-strip syndicates: Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's Superman Cartoonists often worked for studios that mass-produced and packaged stories and titles for the publishers. Extractions: I'll admit, I was never a huge fan of modern South African pop, particularly the slick, upbeat mbaqanga pop, or the choral music that was all the rage in the "world music" scene in the mid-'80s... I always thought, yeah, it's powerful and dynamic... but kinda boring. Imagine my delight, then, when I came across the "jazz" and "jive" music of the 1940s, '50s and '60s, with its delirious collision of ska-like African rhythms and American-style swing and rock melodies. It's some of the greatest music I've ever heard. Completely irresistible, although a little hard to track down. Here are recommendations from what I've heard so far. This isn't really the kind of South African "jive" I'm talking about here, although it is the bridge between the classic style and the more widely known township styles of the Mahotella Queens and other groups who came to our outside attention in the 1980s. I prefer the older style, but if you like more modern South African pop, this is a really nice disc, and is surprisingly modern, considering that these recordings date back to the early 1960s. A young Malathini plays on several of the tracks. (Note: this CD is frequently mistaken for a compilation, in fact it is material by two different bands, mainly of the Dark City Sisters, which wa the more famous of the two groups.)
