Extractions: The American Presidency Archives of American Art Recollecting the Presidents An election year exhibition proudly hails the chiefs Back in the old days, when the political conventions still chose the Presidential candidates, Smithsonian curator Herbert Collins would cruise the littered aisles and floors, alert for relics to take home to immortality in the Smithsonians collections. Several generations of dedicated curators have gathered such objects for what is today the National Museum of American Historys political history collection. Here reside mementos of the Presidents of the United States beginning with George Washington. The Smithsonians Presidential connection also includes the immensely popular collection of gowns of the First Ladies, many worn at inaugural balls, which have themselves often been held in Smithsonian buildings. And it was former President John Quincy Adams, elected to the House of Representatives after his single term in the White House, who played a leading role in the creation of the Smithsonian in 1846. After the Smithsonians own inauguration, people wasted little time bringing Presidential items to the Institution. But the accumulation of relics has not always been evenly spread across those who served. In the case of some Presidents, like Washington and Lincoln, the collections are strong. On the other hand, Chester A. Arthurs list includes a fishing reel, a cartoon and little else.

Extractions: Bill Fitzgerald® #69-The Strange Coincidences of American Presidential Deaths in Office Part IX The last President to die in office after having been elected in a year ending in zero was President John F. Kennedy. He was elected in 1960 and served from January 1961 until his death by assassination in November 1963. Nixon had survived a difficult childhood when two of his siblings died from tuberculosis. And when he served as Vice President for eight years under President Eisenhower he was almost killed when his vehicle was attacked by a mob in Caracas, Venezuela during an official visit to that country. So, perhaps, the Republican candidate felt that if he could survive what he had already experienced there was little chance of him dying in office? Perhaps Kennedy felt that he was invincible and so, too, was the nation he led? Or, maybe, he believed that there simply was nothing he could do to change what was destined to be? This latter thought may be closer to the truth than the former. On at least one other occasion he was asked about assassination and how the President might protect against it. His response was that ultimately there was no defense against a fanatic who was willing to sacrifice himself to murder a President. President Kennedy had won the 1960 election from Vice President Nixon by the closest margin in American history up to that time. (The most recent election, 2000, has been closer.) There were very strong, substantiated claims of vote fraud in that election in the State of Illinois, specifically in Cook County, the County in which the Democratic Party stronghold of Chicago was located.

In a cool, darkened control room on Capitol Hill, C-SPAN technician Paul Munson watches the final few minutes of the 619th Booknotes interview. How did C-SPAN, so closely identified by the public with live coverage of the U.S. Congress, become this involved with nonfiction books and their authors? It's been an evolution, to be sure, but it began in 1986, when an invitation arrived from Warren Burger, recently retired as chief justice of the United States Supreme Court and supervising a task dear to his heart, the national celebration of the U.S. Constitution's bicentennial. Would I, he inquired, join a group of media executives forming an advisory committee for the national celebration? Interested, as much as anything, in an opportunity to observe the well-known chief justice up close, I agreed. In one of our sessions, Chief Justice Burger spoke to the group of the enormous odds that had faced the writers of the Constitution two hundred years earlier. The Library will be the new home of the Illinois State Historical Library and its 46,000-piece Henry Horner Lincoln Collection. Construction on the Museum portion of the complex began in the spring of 2002 and is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2004. The familiar landmarks of the Cold War from the Berlin Wall to intercontinental missiles and bombers on constant high alert were gone. Eastern Europe was independent, the Soviet Union had dissolved, Germany was united, Arabs and Israelis were engaged in direct negotiations, and the threat of nuclear conflict was greatly diminished. It was as though one great history volume had closed and another had opened. Yet at home, Americans were less sanguine and faced some deep and familiar problems. Once the celebrations and parades following the Gulf War ended, the United States found itself in its deepest recession since the early 1980s. Many of the job losses were occurring among white-collar workers in middle management positions, not solely among blue-collar workers in the manufacturing sector who had been hit hardest in earlier years. Even when the economy began recovering in 1992, its growth was virtually imperceptible until late in the year, and many regions of the country remained mired in recession. Moreover, the federal deficit continued to mount, propelled most strikingly by rising expenditures for health care. Many Americans exhibited profound pessimism about their future, believing that their country was headed in the wrong direction.

We also resolve to honor the achievements and legacy of these proud citizens by continuing to improve our society so that it fully lives up to our founding ideals. In 1915, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson recognized the need for our country to gain a more complete and informed understanding of our past. He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and established the first Negro History Week to emphasize that "We have a wonderful history behind us . . . " Through the pioneering efforts of Dr. Woodson and the hard work of the Association, this observance officially became Black History Month in 1976.
