This is precisely the tension that appears in the international programs of the Business School and the Law School (discussed above in sections A-2a and A-2e ) and to some extent it plays out in one of the broad differences between the humanities, which have (with notable exceptions, of course) traditionally been organized according to linguistic and cultural groups or areas (e.g., the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations and the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations), and those of the social sciences, which are generally organized according to cross-cultural topics such as Political Science or Economics. It is true that a number of Social Sciences departments remain interested in developing expertise in specific cultures and regions, but in the last few decades work has focused with increasing intensity on topical studies, a development that will be discussed further in connection with the area study centers (see below
