Bush Inaugural Addresses Until the mid-1970s, the February 22 birthday of George Washington, hero of the Revolutionary War and first president of the United States, was a national holiday. In addition, the February 12 birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the president during the Civil War (1861-1865), was a holiday in most states. In the 1970s, Congress declared that in order to honor all past presidents of the United States, a single holiday, to be called Presidents' Day, would be observed on the third Monday in February. Extractions: Dwight D. Eisenhower Bringing to the Presidency his prestige as commanding general of the victorious forces in Europe during World War II, Dwight D. Eisenhower obtained a truce in Korea and worked incessantly during his two terms to ease the tensions of the Cold War. He pursued the moderate policies of "Modern Republicanism," pointing out as he left office, "America is today the strongest, most influential, and most productive nation in the world." Born in Texas in 1890, brought up in Abilene, Kansas, Eisenhower was the third of seven sons. He excelled in sports in high school, and received an appointment to West Point. Stationed in Texas as a second lieutenant, he met Mamie Geneva Doud, whom he married in 1916. In his early Army career, he excelled in staff assignments, serving under Generals John J. Pershing, Douglas MacArthur, and Walter Krueger. After Pearl Harbor, General George C. Marshall called him to Washington for a war plans assignment. He commanded the Allied Forces landing in North Africa in November 1942; on D-Day, 1944, he was Supreme Commander of the troops invading France.

Easter , which falls on a spring Sunday that varies from year to year, celebrates the Christian belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. For Christians, Easter is a day of religious services and the gathering of family. Many Americans follow old traditions of coloring hard-boiled eggs and giving children baskets of candy. On the next day, Easter Monday, the president of the United States holds an annual Easter egg hunt on the White House lawn for young children. Christmas Day , December 25, is another Christian holiday; it marks the birth of the Christ Child. Decorating houses and yards with lights, putting up Christmas trees, giving gifts, and sending greeting cards have become traditions even for many non-Christian Americans. New Year's Day , of course, is January 1. The celebration of this holiday begins the night before, when Americans gather to wish each other a happy and prosperous coming year.

The Hildebrands music figures in each segment of this successful documentary, and they provided the ideas and raw musical materials that resulted in the soundtrack CD (Sony Classical SK 63216). While bigger-name musicians Yo-Yo Ma, James Taylor, Wynton Marsalis and Mark OConnor were brought in late in the process, David and Gingers music from Over the Hills and Far Away and Music of the Charles Carroll Family intermingles throughout. Classes of membership shall consist of (a) annual members, (b) institutional members, (c) student members, (d) life members and (e) such other classifications of membership as may here after be established. Section 2) The membership of the society shall not be limited as to number, residency, or citizenship. ARTICLE II: Officers Section 1) The officers of the society shall consist of a President, a Vice-President, a Secretary, a Treasurer, Editor of Environmental History (ex officio, without vote), and seven elective executive committee members. These officers, with the three immediate past presidents, shall transact such business as may be assigned to it under these bylaws or by the society. Section 2) The President shall preside at all business meet ings of the society, shall appoint members of all committees except where otherwise provided for in these bylaws, and shall be ex-officio a member of all committees, except when the committee or its chairman is appointed by the executive committee. In case of the President's absence or inability to act, the Vice-President shall discharge the duties of the President. Section 3) The Vice-President shall have overall charge of arrangements for the society's annual program, for which purpose he/she shall also appoint a program committee. This group shall consist of interested officers and members. He/she shall also arrange joint programs with other organizations in cooperation with the President and members of the executive committee. He/she shall act for the President in all other matters when the President is absent or unable to act.
