Olympia served as Commodore George Dewey's flagship during the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898. In that engagement, Spanish naval forces in the Philippines were handed a smashing defeat, securing the Philippines for the United States and embarking the nation on an expanded role as a major force in not only the Pacific, but also world affairs. The cruiser was born out of a program of ships for the "New Navy" of the 1880s and 1890s designed to correct the deficiencies of a weakened and neglected naval force. This program was directly responsible for the rise of the steel shipbuilding industry of the United States. Olympia is the last remaining ship built during that program and the sole surviving naval combatant of the Spanish-American War."

She was designated to serve as submarine flagship of the Southwest Pacific Fleet under General Douglas MacArthur. Again quoting the Historic Naval Ships Association, "An example of the standard fleet-type Balao class submarine of World War II, Becuna conducted five wartime patrols with the U.S. Seventh Fleet. Becuna sank the 7500 ton freighter Nichiyoku Maru, two small coastal freighters, assisted the Hawkbill with the sinking of the oiler Tokuwa Maru, and damaged another oiler. The submarine also served as a lifeguard for downed pilots and narrowly missed an attack on the battleship Yamato.

Knisely Between the Wars From War to Boom to Bust to War We will be playing a simulation game for the next several days to get a feel for the time period between the wars. We will then study the period to see if the game is a reasonable reflection of the time period and the way people were behaving and reacting to events and economic factors. Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president, tried to ensure peace abroad after The Great War but his domestic policies helped contribute to renewed problems for African-Americans in this country. The nation suffered a small economic down-turn after the war but that was to be short-lived. Warren G. Harding, president 29, was the first elected with the vote of women. Some blamed women for the problems that occurred during his administration such as the Teapot Dome Scandal. He tried, and pretty much succeeded in returning America to "normalcy" following the war. What would that mean to a Republican president? "Silent Cal", as the 30th president Calvin Coolidge was known, cleaned up the tarnished reputation of the Republicans after Harding's death. A man of few words said of this country, "The business of America is Business." What's that mean and is it consistent with what you know about Republican policies?

Extractions: Sub Photos THE UNITED STATES entered World War I in 1917 with a total of 24 diesel powered submarines. U.S. Navy submarines patrolled the waters off the U.S. East Coast and deployed overseas to the Azores and Ireland. The American subs primary missions were to escort Allied shipping and counter the German U-boat threat. Though there were no confirmed sinkings of U-boats by American submarines the number of German attacks repulsed by near misses showed the submarine to be an effective anti-submarine weapon. However, it was Germanys use of the U-boat in World War I that demonstrated the vital role the submarine would play in the next global conflict. After the war, the U.S. Navy slowly built up its sub force. Construction contracts with commercial shipyards were cut back, forcing the Lake Torpedo Boat Company to go out of business in 1922. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire became one of the largest submarine builders in the U.S. and between 1924 and 1929 the Portsmouth yard designed and built five 381-foot V-class submarines. Between 1932 and 1941, Portsmouth built an additional 22 submarines in the 1500-ton category. It was during this period that the first all-welded submarine, USS Pike (SS-173), was completed. The welded hull allowed Pike to submerge to much greater depths than her predecessors and at the same time provided greater protection against depth-charge attacks.

Extractions: Bibliography of Archaeoastronomy The contribution of archaeoastronomy to established disciplines continues to grow. With it grows the number of courses that include a substantial component of archaeoastronomy. Archaeoastronomy courses are not a staple of departmental offerings, but are usually associated with the efforts of one or two interested faculty members. They are fragile and can easily disappear. At Baylor University, the course, SOC and ANTH 4354 (Archaeoastronomy) was taught for some years by Jose Valbuera. On his departure the course perished. However, even the temporary existence of such a course contributes to a broader appreciation of what archaeoastronomy can contribute to various academic disciplines. Following is a list of University level courses in which the interaction of astronomy and culture is a significant component. It results from a quick survey, and is by no means exhaustive, much less complete. It does not include the general astronomy or anthropology courses that may include a lecture or two on archaeoastronomy, nor those history of astronomy courses that focus only on the development of the modern science itself. Demonstrating the interdisciplinary nature of archaeoastronomy, these courses are found in astronomy anthropology, history, humanities, and religious studies departments as well as Latin American studies, and honor's programs. They also range from lower division general education courses to graduate courses aimed at a particular culture. The resources represented by these extant courses may serve those interested in developing their own courses.
