Extractions: Home Health Information Resources for Teachers January 14, 2003 What do Tiger Woods, Welsh soprano Charlotte Church, and 18-year-old Ryan Patterson, recent winner of the most prestigious science competitions in the country, have in common? They found something they like to do, and then they got busy doing it really, really early in their careers. (How early, you ask? While most kids are mastering Dr. Seuss and playing with Star Wars action figures at the ripe age of six, Tiger was golfing with pros and scoring in the 50s, Charlotte was performing at camps and karaoke competitions, and Ryan well, Ryan was helping his dad rewire the house!) Several are helpful in building awareness in children of the importance of hearing conservation and the problem of noise-induced hearing loss. Others may be used to introduce and reinforce scientific understanding of hearing and the science of sound. Still others are meant to provide opportunities for children to influence the awareness and understanding of others. Ryan, who graduated in 2002 from Central High School in Grand Junction, Colo., has gotten a charge out of electronics since day one.

Extractions: Believing and trusting the United States: That they were an ally and friend in the fight against Spain, their common enemy; That they would recognize and support the independence aspirations of the Filipino people; That they had no territorial intentions in the Philippines as it was in violation to their own Constitution; That the Monroe Doctrine would extend and apply only within the North and South American continents. Confident that the right moment has arrived, General Emilio Aguinaldo, who just recently revived the second phase of the Philippine Revolution after his return from Hong Kong and Singapore exile, declared the Philippine independence on June 12, 1898, unilaterally freeing the Philippines from centuries of Spanish colonial rule, without the blessings of the United States or any foreign powers. Commodore George Dewey's historic naval victory at the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898 stunned the whole world . Even the U.S. itself was caught unprepared what to do with the Philippines whether to give its blessings to the recently self-declared Philippine independence, to give up the "spoil of war" to England, to sell it to other friendly superpowers such as Japan, or to keep it as a model colony, but not to Germany, accompeting superpower that was also interested in acquiring territorial positions in the Pacific.

Extractions: Two hundred thirty one stories. All tragic. All ending with the death of a father, son, brother or other loved one far from home. And Lynna Shuffield of Houston wants to find more. To uncover everything she can about Milam County's war dead before it's too late for some families. There are 231 more-or-less confirmed Milam veterans who died in American wars this century. Shuffield thinks more names need to be added to the county's "list of honors." And she knows there is much more information to be found about many of the names on those lists. She is specifically seeking information on 21 men, representing only the letters A and B on the county's list of war dead. It's a bureaucratic nightmare punctuated by occasional plunges into the deepest human emotions. Like the day she contacted Johnnie Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona. Johnson, at great risk to his own life, complied a list of 496 men who died while in North Korean captivity from 1950-53. One of them was Nicholas Garza of Rockdale. Garza's death was unconfirmed, at least so far as his family was concerned, until Johnson's list was made public in 1996.

Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has watched the military evolve over the past 35 years. During a recent interview with American Forces Press Service, Pace talked of the changes he's seen and of the changes yet to come. Here is the third in a three-part series on the general's views. By Linda D. Kozaryn American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON, Oct. 31, 2002 Many things in the military have changed over the past 35 years, but leadership is not one of them, according to Marine Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "Leadership is still leadership, but the tools that you have available to exercise that leadership have changed," Pace said. Leadership principles have remained constant from Roman times through World Wars I and II to today, he said. "Now we have the opportunity to get our message out much faster and to many more people."
