Extractions: Lt. Gen. Ronald Kadish has been the director of the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency (MDA) since June 1999. Here, he talks about the many obstacles that his agency has overcome and those that still remain, and why he's increasingly confident about the prospects for a defense against long-range missiles. Kadish also responds to criticism that the MDA has become unnecessarily secretive in recent months. This interview was conducted by FRONTLINE producer Sherry Jones on May 22, 2002. To handle a ballistic missile in flight is to actually hit it at high speed, and the sheer force of that collision will destroy the warhead. ... Imagine having a ballistic missile that has three phases of flight . It gets launched under power, the rocket. Then there's a warhead on top that gets thrown off into space and coasts through space in an area that we call the midcourse. Then it re-enters the atmosphere toward its target to do its damage. Now this warhead is generally about five feet tall and about three feet in diameter, somewhere in that area. It's a cone, and this thing's traveling faster than a bullet: Closing velocities on intercepts are in excess of 15,000 mph. So in order to hit something going that fast with closing velocities and angles is a big challenge. But what has happened over the past few years, certainly over the last 20, is that computer speeds have gotten better, processing power has gotten better, sensors have gotten better. So we are able now to hit that cone being thrown off by a ballistic missile going those kinds of speeds 15,000 mph or more, collide with it and hit it in a space about that big. ...

Bush and his administration. (Chicago) Political pundits and academics agree that the Presidency of George Walker Bush will leave a legacy of being one of the most controversial periods in American history. For the first time since the end of the Nixon Era, the policies of the Bush Presidency have incited the largest protests by Americans over a wide-range of issues most notably over the Bush First Strike War Doctrine. Insisting that the Bush II Presidency is one of mismanagement and exercise of behavior contrary to the basic fundamentals of American idealism, prominent members of past Democratic and G.O.P. administrations have begun deliberations on whether or not to pursue a campaign forcing Congress to institute impeachment proceedings for Bush, Vice President Richard Cheney, Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Attorney General John Ashcroft. Leading the charge for impeachment is former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark. In a speech before the crowds assembled at the January 18, 2003 march in Washington organized by National ANSWR against military aggression in Iraq, Clark said, Impeachment is the direct constitutional means for removing a President, Vice President or other civil officers of the United States who has acted or threatened acts that are serious offenses against the Constitution, its system of government, or the rule of law, or that are conventional crimes of such a serious nature that they would injure the Presidency if there was no removal.

Facilities include a tour road, visitor center, and the Malus-Beauregard House (c.1833). Adjacent is the Chalmette National Cemetery. Located on St. Bernard Highway in Chalmette. The Battlefield is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Battle of New Orleans lasted less than two hours, with the major fighting confined to about 30 minutes. British casualties exceeded 2,000; the Americans reported only 13. On January 18 the British retreated to Lake Borgne, ending the Louisiana campaign and ensuring the United States of a bright future for the lower Mississippi Valley. Chalmette Monument The cornerstone of this shaft honoring the American victory at New Orleans was laid in January 1840, within days after Andrew Jackson visited the field on the 25th anniversary of the battle. Not until 1855, however, did the State of Louisiana begin actual construction. The monument was completed in 1908, a year after it was ceded to the United States. Malus-Beauregard House This beautiful example of French-Louisiana architecture was built some 18 years after the Battle of New Orleans and is named for its last private owner, Judge René Beauregard. Never associated with a plantation, the house served as a country residence for a succession of wealthy people in the 19th century.

Extractions: Dave Pugliese, Ottawa Citizen The Canadian military wants to take part in a controversial U.S. plan to build a North American ballistic missile defence shield by contributing more than $600 million in space hardware. Canadian Forces officials have been pushing for a role in the American national missile defence system since 1997, according to Access to Information documents obtained by the Citizen. Under the Canadian military plan its participation in the system would be deemed an "asymmetrical" role, where Canada would not directly fund the American missile defence shield but provide a variety of space and ground equipment for surveillance and other jobs to support the North American Aerospace Defence Command, or NORAD. NORAD currently does the job of watching over American and Canadian airspace. According to the documents, the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff want NORAD to take a key controlling role in the missile defence system if the Canadian government approves Canadian Forces participation. Canadian participation in the American system, which would involve the construction of interceptor missiles capable of destroying ballistic rockets headed toward North America while they are still in space, was also recommended at a high-level meeting during a government retreat in Merrickville in November. That meeting involved Canadian military officials and government policy specialists.

But during the Mexican-American War he proved incapable of winning a single battle. At the Battle of Cerro Gordo (April 17-18, 1847), 8,500 men under U.S. Maj. Gen. Winfield Scott drove Santa Anna' 12,000 troops from the field in precipitate haste. Santa Anna fled right along with his troops, abandoning his baggage as he did. The general-president's carriage was captured by American troops. In it they found a number of the general's impressive uniforms, plus his war chest of $70,000 in silver. And they found something else, as well. As a result of a wound received in 1839, Santa Anna had only one leg. In his traveling carriage, the American troops found the Santa Anna's spare leg. This prize led to the composition of a song, to the tune of "The Girl I Left Behind Me." The Leg I Left Behind Me
