Although the pioneering effort was motivated by a desire to help an 82-year old patient deemed too weak to withstand the open surgery that is traditionally performed to repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm, doctors believe a similar method will one day become the standard of care for many patients. "Although we're using specially crafted apparatus, we're making the same kind of repair that is accomplished with surgery," says Jeffrey P. Carpenter, MD, associate professor of surgery, division of vascular surgery. "The important difference is that instead of working from the outside of the patient, we work from the inside. Our new procedure is much less invasive, so the patient is spared the risks and debilitation associated with major abdominal surgery."

The chief signs of an arterial aneurysm are the formation of a pulsating tumor and often a bruit is heard over the swelling. Sometimes there are symptoms from pressure on contiguous parts. The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It arises from the left ventricle, ascending and bending over the heart, descending anteriorly to the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. It splits at L-4 into the common iliacs, femorals, tibials, and dorsalis pedis arteries, supplying the lower extremities. The average diameter of aorta is 2.0-2.5 cm. More than 90 percent of abdominal aneurysms are associated with atherosclerosis and can cause leg pain (claudication), numbness or fatigue. An artery may be sclerosed (hardened) but if the lumenal diameter isn't altered, there is no aneurysm. Most abdominal aortic aneurysms do not produce symptoms, but some people feel a pulsating sensation in the abdomen. These silent (asymptomatic) aneurysms are often recognized by careful physical examination. Abdominal aortic aneurysm is most likely to occur in people older than 60 years, and it affects men more often than women.

A relatively common bleed in the third compartment of the brain from which nearly everyone of us has had a friend or relative die. However, according to Dr Azad Esack, a consultant neurologist, there are really four types of Intracranial Bleeds in the head from which bleeding can occur in several areas, so that a patient who collapses and dies from a brain hemorrhage could have suffered from any of the four and not necessarily an aneurysm, which is caused by a rupture of a congenital defect in the wall of a blood vessel in the brain. Stress, for instance, can cause a rise in blood pressure which puts pressure on the already weak system and gives rise to this bleed. The "Aneurysm" and "Aterio-Venous Malformation" described as a abnormal collection of blood vessels may both give rise to one of the types, Sub-Arachnoid Bleeding.
