Healthy Pet | Human/Animal Bond: Why Do Pets End Up In Shelters? in the July issue of the Journal of Applied animal Welfare Science (JAAWS), researcherswent into 12 selected animal shelters in the united states for one year http://www.healthypet.com/Library/animal_bond-12.html
Extractions: Study Finds the Top 10 Reasons for Pet Relinquishment Every day in communities across the US a bond is broken. It's the bond between people and their pets, resulting in millions of pets being surrendered to shelters each year. And little has been known about the reasons why until now. In a recent study conducted by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP) and published in the July issue of the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science (JAAWS) , researchers went into 12 selected animal shelters in the United States for one year to find out why. The results of the study show that the top seven reasons for relinquishment for both dogs and cats are the same. "These commonalties suggest that there may be similar ways to address relinquishment in dogs and cats," says Pam Burney, NCPPSP president. "For people who work in a shelter all day, there isn't always time to look at these issues. We have impressions of what's happening, but now we have objective data that will help us develop specific programs to address the issues that have been identified." Extractions: Where to Find a Dog? Animal Shelters Animal shelters are excellent places to find a new pet. Shelters are usually run by local governments, or by caring citizens who form private non-profit groups. Shelters can be found under many different names, such as: humane societies, animal protection leagues, the pound, the cruelty society, animal care and control, foster homes, etc. There are several national organizations that help to promote the good work that is done on behalf of abandoned pets: With the very real problem of pet overpopulation in the United States, shelters are bulging with large numbers of cats and dogs that are in need of a good home. These are animals that have been turned-in by their owners for one reason or another, or have entered as strays, with no one to claim them. Unfortunately, with limited space and resources, the majority of pets that enter a shelter must be put to death unless they are adopted by a new owner. Certain shelters are able to stretch their resources and have a "no-kill" policy in place, but tragically most facilities are unable to maintain this type of policy. The good news is that you can make a real difference by bringing a shelter pet into your home. The cost is usually minimal, typically ranging from $15 to $75. The fees may already include shots and/or neutering. Sometimes the first veterinarian visit is also included in the fee, and if the pet hasn't already been spayed or neutered, you will be strongly advised or required to do so.

To respond to the needs of those who provide emergency and supportive care to animals during all phases of a disaster. To promote the inclusion of the animal component in all federal, state, and local government disaster plans, and those developed by the general public, by engaging in an ongoing process of proactive education and mutual awareness of the needs of animals in disasters. To encourage cooperation with other animal protection organizations, veterinary associations, disaster relief agencies, and government officials." - The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) Mission Statement for Disaster Services The HSUS has responded to disasters throughout its history. However, in 1992, its efforts culminated into the development of the Disaster Services Program after Hurricane Andrew devastated a 20-by-50 square mile area south of Miami. At that time, HSUS staff joined local animal groups in establishing the first-ever temporary pet shelter/veterinary MASH unit, a model that has been used in disasters affecting animals ever since. The HSUS Disaster Services Program works on three levels: Preparedness, Awareness, and Response. The number and severity of disasters appear to be increasing and having a major impact on all types of animals and their owners, primarily because of a lack of comprehensive and coordinated planning. Through the years, The HSUS has determined its efforts should go beyond assisting animals already impacted by disasters. A major focus should be on the development of proactive animal disaster plans on local, state, and national levels.

The four regional surveys were conducted in Colorado; Kentucky and Tennessee; New Jersey and New York; and California and explain the main reasons why pet owners relinquished their pets to shelters in those areas. The two studies, conducted by Colorado State veterinary epidemiologist Dr. M.D. Salman and sponsored by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, reveal that moving and other lifestyle issues were the main reasons given by pet owners when surrendering their animals to shelters. It is simply a matter of democracy. The majority rules in a democracy. We are going to use the ballot box and the democratic process to stop all hunting in the United States... While these figures unfortunately show the large number of animals which are euthanized, they also reflect the many adoptions we are doing. In a perfect world every animal would have a good home. We do our best with the resources we have, but for many animals that is not enough. The support of the community in controlling pet populations by spaying and neutering is the ONLY real solution to this problem. Just remember that with your support over one hundred dogs and cats a month are adopted from the shelter. Without you, this would not be possible.

If you add to that the number of offspring of stray and abandoned animals, the total becomes even more staggering. Every year, between 8 and 12 million animals enter shelters in the United States. Some 4 to 6 million of these animals are destroyed because there are not enough homes for them. Some people refuse to spay or neuter their pet because they mistakenly think that it would be nice for their pet to have puppies or kittens. But what they don't realize is that each responsible home that is found for these puppies and kittens means one less home that is available for the thousands of shelter animals that are waiting to be adopted. Every day, animal shelters across the United States are forced to destroy thousands of animals for lack of responsible homes.
