Extractions: HMS Rose Here is the full picture (109k) This museum has been restructured to tell the story of English Harbour and of the people that toiled and sweated in this famous Georgian naval yard. It will also explain the 20th century return of sailing ships and the aims and aspirations of Nelson's Dockyard National Park. A library, with copies of original documents and database of Caribbean naval history, is available for researchers. The history of the yard shows that it was built from 1725 and was abandoned by the navy in 1889. There are many interesting buildings of fine Georgian architecture. They began to be restored in 1932 and the work continued from 1951. Many points of interest both naval and military, within the Dockyard and surrounding areas, will fascinate the visitor. The gift shop next to the museum in the Naval Officer's House is one of the best in Antigua. The Dockyard is now a National Park , an important tourist attraction and a regional yachting centre with a fine yacht marina and many facilities.

Wills and demographic growth at the end of the Middle Ages in a mountain region: Valais, Switzerland, from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. [Testaments et reprise demographique a la fin du Moyen Age dans un pays de montagne: le Valais (Suisse), XIVe-XVIe siecles.] Annales de Demographie Historique, 1991. 221-38 pp. Paris, France. In Fre. with sum. in Eng. "This paper, a part of a wide-ranging research on the population of the upper Rhone valley (canton Valais, southern Switzerland) between 1200 and 1600, deals with demographic growth during the XVth and XVIth centuries, as observed through the growth of the mean number of children outliving their parents. The documentary basis is a corpus of 791 wills dictated between 1300 and 1600 by adults leaving children behind. Particular emphasis has been laid on the critical analysis of data....[From] its lowest point in the years 1350-1374 (1.46 children), the mean size of the inheriting group of siblings grows regularly to reach a first maximum in the years 1450-1474 (2.99 children) and a second one in the 1550-1574 period (3.46 children). Such a relatively precocious and strong growth is made possible mainly by diminishing epidemic mortality."
Extractions: Source: The Library of Congress Country Studies THE COMMONWEALTH CARIBBEAN is the term applied to the English- speaking islands in the Carribbean and the mainland nations of Belize (formerly British Honduras) and Guyana (formerly British Guiana) that once constituted the Caribbean portion of the British Empire. This volume examines only the islands of the Commonwealth Caribbean, which are Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, the Windward Islands (Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada), Barbados, the Leeward Islands (Antigua and Barbuda, St. Christopher [hereafter, St. Kitts] and Nevis, the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and Montserrat), and the so-called Northern Islands (the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands). To the casual observer, these islands might appear to be too disparate to allow for a common discussion. Consider, for instance, the differences in population, size, income, ethnic composition, and political status among the various islands. Anguilla's 7,000 residents live on an island totaling 91 square kilometers, whereas Jamaica has a population of 2.3 million and a territory of nearly 11,000 square kilometers. The per capita gross domestic product (GDPsee Glossary) of the Cayman Islands is nearly fourteen times as large as that of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Trinidad and Tobago's population is evenly divided between blacks and East Indians, a pattern quite different from that on the other islands, on which blacks constitute an overwhelming majority. Although most of the islands are independent nations, five (the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Montserrat, the Cayman Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands) remain British dependencies.
