Aquaculture is a significant contributor to the provincial economy, and most aquaculture jobs are located in coastal communities. With its climate, good water quality and sheltered bays, British Columbia's coastline is well suited for both finfish and shellfish aquaculture. In 2000, the farmgate value of the salmon, shellfish and trout sectors combined was $295 million. Farmed salmon is B.C.'s largest agricultural export product. There are three groups of species currently cultured in British Columbia waters: Commercial fisheries are also a significant contributor to the provincial economy and the social fabric of numerous coastal communities. This industry includes the commercial harvesting of more than 80 different species of finfish, shellfish, and marine plants from both freshwater and marine environments. Extractions: The student chapter of The Wildlife Society provides events and activities to involve undergraduates and graduate students in issues involving wildlife, fisheries and forestry. Monthly guest speakers in the past have included subjects about radar research of neotropical migratory birds, cougar sightings in South Carolina, the life and philosophy of Aldo Leopold. Students enjoy attending three State Chapter meetings every year. This opportunity affords the students to meet statewide wildlife professionals, as does the spring banquet. In the fall, students have the opportunity to attend the Annual Conference of The Wildlife Society. These professional meetings are held throughout the nation which gives students the chance to meet national and international wildlife professionals. In the past year, CUTWS along with the CU Forestry Club sponsored a special public symposium on "Managing for Threatened and Endangered Species on Commercial Forest Lands." Students who had spent the summer working on special projects involving neotropical migratory birds in North Carolina, gopher tortoises in Mississippi, the Karner blue butterfly in Wisconsin and the red-cockaded woodpecker in Arkansas, presented the results of their findings at this symposium.

Stoller Fisheries operates under HACCP and has been assigned an export approval number from the United States Food and Drug Administration. Stoller Fisheries also produces a full line of fish caviars, commercial baits, byproducts from fish waste, and engages in custom processing. PLATE-FROZEN FISH BLOCKS The supply of plate-frozen fish blocks from either mechanically deboned (minced) fish and small filets is becoming more and more scarce from traditionally species such as COD. Stoller Fisheries is investigating the installation of a plate freezer to plate freeze blocks of filets and mechanically deboned fish from under utilized species of fresh water fish such as carp, buffalo fish, fresh water sheep head, and fresh water suckers. Custom processing is available. SOUP BASES AND FISH STOCKS As a primary processor Stoller Fisheries is capable of mincing (mechanically deboning) up to 60,000 pounds of under utilized species of fresh water fish daily. These fish include the common carp, buffalo fish, fresh water sheep head (drum), fresh water sucker (also known as the fresh water mullet) and many other species. The company can also mechanically debone salmon and ocean species. There is a growing demand for minced fish to be used as dehydrated soup bases and as fish stocks and Stoller Fisheries can custom process these fish for your needs. Extractions: The Fisheries Laboratory The main tasks of the Fisheries Laboratory are to carry out research in fishery biology, oceanography, and aquaculture, to advise the authorities and industry, and to report on the research results. The investigations which are carried out provide a basis for the most responsible exploitation of the fish stocks around the Faroes. Assessments are made of the most important fish stocks. These assessments are based on investigations, independent of the industry, which are carried out by the research vessel, Magnus Heinason; e.g. 0-group surveys, bottom trawls surveys and echo soundings, and on the catch and effort statistics for the commercial fleet. The biology of the various species of fish are studied, including fluctuations in the stocks, growth, spawning and feeding. Fish which are under-exploited are fished on an experimental basis. Consideration is then given to whether these could be fished commercially, and experiments are carried out to find the best equipment. The oceanography and the living organisms in the waters around the Faroes are studied; for example temperatures, currents, and the conditions for living organisms to grow and reproduce are examined. This is done with a view to finding out more about the conditions in the sea that affect the reproductive success of various species of fish in Faroese waters, and the conditions affecting the growth of living organisms there.
