There was a press release on Yew Dell Gardens (Crestwood, KY) this past week in the Louisville Courier Journal regarding the efforts and anticipated opening of this beautiful place. Here is the link below, this is probably one of the greatest hidden horticultural treasures in the Ohio Valley. In addition at the new Boone County Arboretum (Union, KY) we have now form a "Friends of The Arboretum" organization to channel volunteer work, and monetary donations to insure continued growth and community involvement. Since its inception in September we have gathered 24 volunteers so far! :-) You can find out more by visiting http://www.bcarboretum.org Here is a link that might be useful: Yew Dell Gardens Follow-Up Postings: Posted by: plantingal My Page ) on Fri, Nov 8, 02 at 11:37

Beal Botanical Garden and Michigan State University are pleased to announce that we will host the 1998 Midwest Regional Meeting of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta, July 16-19, 1998 as part of our 125th Anniversary Celebration. Hosted by the W.J. Beal Botanical Garden East Lansing, MI Registration Reservation Midwestern Gardens continue to face a number of national and international issues which require specific tuning to the Midwestern environment. Topics include collections development, endangered species and habitats, exotics and invasive species (plants, pathogens and insects), urban forestry, education and outreach, fund raising and program development, grounds maintenance, plant evaluation, and interpretation and display to mention a few. University and College programs are an important resource in addressing many of these issues. The focus of this meeting will be to address the needs of the Public Garden and how the gardens, extension, research and education programs of the academic community can serve the greater community of Public Gardens. The Staff of the W. J. Beal Botanical Garden invite you to attend the 1998 AABGA Midwest Regional Meeting at the nation's first land-grant college. Come and participate in what promises be an exciting and informative conference, join us in celebrating the 125th anniversary of the W.J. Beal Botanical Garden, and attend study tours of the Beal Botanical Garden, Horticultural Demonstration Gardens, 4-H Childrens Garden, C.E. Lewis Landscape Arboretum, Beaumont Nursery, the Botany and Plant Pathology Teaching Greenhouse and Butterfly House, and Hidden Lake Gardens. We are also planning on a study tour/dinner at Michigan State's Hidden Lake Gardens, home of the Harper Rare and Dwarf Conifer Collection.

Blandy is a multi-faceted 700 acre property that attracts visitors, students and scientists. At its heart lies the 172 acre State Arboretum of Virginia which draws 70,000 visitors a year. A biological research station attracts scientists from around the world. The challenge was to create a plan that acknowledged the evolving focus of Blandy Farm in three broad categories: University research and education, outreach and environmental education, and curation of plant collections and display gardens. The master plan creates a rich series of experiences for the visitor and resident that weave the Arboretum, research, and unique cultural and physiogeographic characteristics of the site together. The program includes siting of a 15,000 s.f. Education Center, a parking garden, a drive with eight destinations highlighting places of particular interest, bicycle paths, a bridle trail, and an extensive network of walking paths.

More than a century before American entomologist E. O. Wilson widely publicized the term "biodiversity" in his 1986 book of the same name, botanical gardens were compiling some of the world's first true databases on biological diversity. Extractions: By Walt Dunlap, Mapping Specialist, The New York Botanical Garden Setting Up a Coordinate System Establishing a Grid Placing Markers Creating a Basemap G etting started in computerized mapping may seem a daunting prospect. With so many choices to be made in hardware and software, it's easy to lose sight of some of the first and most basic tasks in setting up any mapping system - creating a grid and a basemap. This article is intended to shed some light on this subject. Once you have established a grid, placed markers, and created a basemap, you are ready to purchase hardware and software, survey plant locations, and begin implementation of your computerized mapping system. Setting Up a Plane Coordinate System I n order to define the locations of plants on your computerized map, it is necessary to set up a coordinate system. Each plant will have associated with it a unique x coordinate and a unique y coordinate that exactly specify its position. In surveying terms, this is considered to be a plane coordinate system because it represents the surface of the earth as a flat surface. Thus, you need not be concerned with the curvature of the earth or changes in elevation when defining the locations of plants. All you need to know are their x and y coordinates.
