Extractions: September/October 1998 Where do you go when looking for accurate information about trees? Books, university extension publications, web pages, trade journals, and of course, City Trees, all provide excellent information on ornamental characteristics, cultural requirements, and possible insect and disease pests of trees. But wouldn't it be great if there was a place where you could view a wide assortment of trees, and draw your own conclusions about them. Well, such places do exist. Arboreta and botanic gardens can be found in virtually every state and most have extensive collections of shade and ornamental trees. But if you happen to live in an area of the country devoid of arboreta, don't despair. You'll probably find several within a half-day's drive. Or you might consider visiting one or several of them during your next business trip, SMA convention, or family vacation. So take advantage of the good autumnal weather and visit an arboretum or two. The following list and accompanying descriptions of arboreta is not meant to be all inclusive, but does provide a good starting point for those interested in learning first hand about trees.

If you are looking up names of plants, check the Horti Plex plant database here at GardenWeb. Proper nouns are generally not included in the glossary. Searches are case insensitive. You can browse the glossary, but there are many pages. Multiple keywords can be searched so that each word must appear in each hit (boolean "and") or so that only one of the words must appear (boolean "or"). To increase the chances of matching keywords with multiple endings, search for "Word Roots." With this setting, epiphyt will match both epiphyte and epiphytic. You can also limit your search to just terms or just definition. Additional Passes: If there are no hits in the first search, common word endings (-ing, -es, -ed, -ly) are stripped from the keywords and a second pass is made. If there is still no match, all non-word characters are stripped. This glossary was compiled by the editors of GardenWeb from a variety of sources.
