Extractions: This new book by Roger C. Smith, state underwater archaeologist for the Florida Division of Historical Resources, takes the reader on a trip both underwater and into the past of the Cayman Islands; and a rollicking, swash-buckling, pirate-filled, shipwreck-strewn adventure-on-the-high-seas past it was! Extractions: * SnowiNote: I was always going to be a teacher as far back as my memory allows. Yep, I was going to teach school, then teach folks how to fly... Helicopters and Jets. I even "taught" every kid in the neighborhood everything I could think of... Mostly Geography since I had a world map on my wall. Well, I got side-tracked and never taught in a school, but now I teach folks how to use the Internet, so I have fulfilled my "childhood dream." I hope you get to meet that one special teacher who not only makes learning fun, but can inspire you with the desire to do the same for someone else. Pass it on. - Snowhawk
Classes In Archaeoastronomy - Archaeology College courses in archaeoastronomy, from your About.com Guide About homework help archaeology. archaeology. Search ss135 History of Science and Technology I. Antiquity to Galileo http://www.anthropology.about.com/blastroclass.htm
Extractions: Bibliography of Archaeoastronomy The contribution of archaeoastronomy to established disciplines continues to grow. With it grows the number of courses that include a substantial component of archaeoastronomy. Archaeoastronomy courses are not a staple of departmental offerings, but are usually associated with the efforts of one or two interested faculty members. They are fragile and can easily disappear. At Baylor University, the course, SOC and ANTH 4354 (Archaeoastronomy) was taught for some years by Jose Valbuera. On his departure the course perished. However, even the temporary existence of such a course contributes to a broader appreciation of what archaeoastronomy can contribute to various academic disciplines. Following is a list of University level courses in which the interaction of astronomy and culture is a significant component. It results from a quick survey, and is by no means exhaustive, much less complete. It does not include the general astronomy or anthropology courses that may include a lecture or two on archaeoastronomy, nor those history of astronomy courses that focus only on the development of the modern science itself. Demonstrating the interdisciplinary nature of archaeoastronomy, these courses are found in astronomy anthropology, history, humanities, and religious studies departments as well as Latin American studies, and honor's programs. They also range from lower division general education courses to graduate courses aimed at a particular culture. The resources represented by these extant courses may serve those interested in developing their own courses.

Extractions: One of the themes to be considered within the New York State fourth grade social studies curriculum is Native American Indians of New York State. The social studies curriculum "builds on the students' understanding of families, schools, and communities and highlights the political institutions and historic development of their local communities with connections to New York State and the United States." "The historical study of local communities focuses on the social/cultural, political, and economic factors that helped shape these communities. Students study about the significant people, places, events, and issues that influenced life in their local communities." The Pine Plains community is situated in northeastern Dutchess County, fifteen miles east of the Hudson River and ten miles west of the New York/Connecticut border. For thousands of years before Europeans settled in the region, it was the home of eastern woodland Indians. The local indigenous peoples called themselves Mahicans. They were hunter-gathers who spoke an Algonquian language. They were not Mohegans, who lived in what is now Connecticut and they were not Iroquois, who lived north and west of the area and would eventually force the Mahicans from the area.
