Extractions: The mosque is a simple enclosure where Muslims go to pray, hear the reading of the Qu'ran and to perform other religious rituals. A mosque is made up of certain sections. One of these, is a wall - or qibla - that faces Mecca , the Holy City. Just off the qibla, is a portico - or porch - which offers protection from the sun. A pool used for ritual cleansing is usually located in the center of the sahn - or courtyard. A mihrab - or sacred niche - in the qibla wall, points in the direction of Mecca and it is here that Muslims pray (always facing Mecca). The minbar is situated to the right of the mihrab. It is a pulpit used for the reading of the Qu'ran. All mosques are decorated with abstract, geometric designs, so as not to accidentally create icons by depicting figures.
