Extractions: "This community has been heavily impacted by flooding resulting from environmentally unfriendly timber management practices in the watershed above the community, and the diversion of water from the Skokomish River to produce hydropower. While AmeriCorps can't resolve those issues, they've provided a great service to this community through their habitat restoration and flood mitigation efforts." Twenty-one Senior Companions serve 75 clients, helping to prevent the premature admission of elders to institutionalized care. The Senior Companions are trained to help isolated, homebound elders remain in their own homes. For clients served by the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council Senior Companion Program project the Senior Companions help with errands and household chores and provided companionship. The trips and in-home visitations allow isolated elders to participate in their community, while also helping them to access services such as Meals on Wheels, driver escort, chore services, public health nurses and grief counseling.

Agencies Question Growing Acceptance Of Mexican ID Cards As of November, more than 800 US police agencies also accepted the IDs and 13 statesaccepted them from Embassy of Mexico http//www.embassyofmexico.org/. http://www.azcentral.com/specials/special03/articles/0131MexicanIDs-ON.html
Extractions: Jan. 31, 2003 07:23 AM WASHINGTON - An identification card issued by Mexico to more than 1 million of its citizens in the United States last year is facing greater scrutiny by a security-conscious U.S. government after complaints by anti-immigration groups. Used by Mexican citizens here for more than a century, the cards are used to open bank accounts, obtain driver's licenses, turn on utilities and enroll children in school. Anti-immigration groups say Mexico is using the card to circumvent U.S. law. The Bush administration is awaiting a report on the IDs from the Department of Homeland Security, and White House spokesman Taylor Gross declined further comment on the president's position. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., introduced a House resolution urging federal agencies to only accept identification that meets a certain security threshold and is issued by the U.S. government. A San Francisco federal building started accepting the cards for entry to the building this month, but suspended the practice amid complaints.
