Extractions: Volume 2, Issue 1 August/September, 2000 Two parent group leaders recount their very different first-year PTA experiences. Patti White and her fellow parent leaders at the Cherry Brook School in Collinsville, Connecticut, thought theyd done everything right. They filled in all the requisite paperwork, they paid their dues ($732), and they waited for the benefits to start arriving. And they waited and they waited and they called for answers and they waited and they e-mailed for answers and they waited . According to White, the real attraction in joining the PTA was the resources that were mentioned so prominently in the initial meeting. We felt that there was going to be this wonderful well of resources to draw on, recalls White. The PTA recruiter talked about bus safety kits and fire safety kits and a monthly magazine and information on speakers for our school. She really sold us that the PTA was going to come out and train our board members and everything. There was also a lot of talk about insurance benefits. It sounded great. And yet, as the 1999-2000 school year began, White looked for the benefits and couldnt find them.

Extractions: Guidelines for Proposition 301 Note: This document is intended to give school district governing board members and school employees some guidance on the prohibitions provided by Arizona Revised Statutes section 15-511, which prohibits the use of school district "personnel, equipment, materials, buildings or other resources for the purpose of influencing the outcomes of elections." Many governing board members and employees will be familiar with the prohibitions of 15-511 from their experiences in school district bond and/or override elections. Simply put, any practice that is prohibited under a school bond or override election will also be prohibited in the Proposition 301 election. The converse is also true. This is said to give governing board members and school employees some comfort in knowing that the rules are not radically different between the two election types and that familiarity with school district restrictions in a bond or override campaign will serve them well in the Proposition 301 campaign. The Guidelines: Don't use school materials or resources.

The story is summarized on the Channel 12 website at: http://www.12news.com/education/FitKids022002.html Kyrene Continues To Elicit Public Input (posted 2/22/02) As you know, the Kyrene Governing Board has established two goals for the 2002-2003 Maintenance and Operations budget: to provide quality programs and market-driven compensation to District employees. The Kyrene School District is facing declining enrollment due to demographic changes within District boundaries and recent competition from charter schools. Lower enrollment numbers and the goals of providing market-driven compensation and maintaining quality programs will affect the Districts budget and will result in necessary budget reductions. The Budget Advisory Group (BAG), whose membership provides equal representation to parents, teachers, support staff, and administrators, is in the process of examining a "yellow" list of possible ideas for budget reductions. This group will prioritize the ideas for budget reductions. However, it is important to note that no decisions have been made to date. There are still two opportunities to provide input to this group.

Q Why does a public school district need a foundation? A : Several public school districts in Arizona have a foundation associated directly with them. Arizona is ranked 50th in the USA for per-pupil spending. Tax dollars only pay for a portion of the cost of educating the children in our district. Seven non-profit organizations contribute to the cost of educating Kyrene school children. Most of those organizations serve a specific school as do the 25 PTOs and PTAs. The Kyrene Foundation strives to provide funding on a much larger scale and to provide some parity among the schools. Q How do you get the funding?
