Student Services The paradigm shift, since I took office is that the Department of Education will be primarily a service organization, helping school districts and charter schools achieve more academic success. The Department is also an organization that assures compliance, and we will have to be conscientious about that, but the compliance function will be secondary. The primary function is now: service. If you would like to read about our 8 primary goals, please click here to read my inaugural speech. It is my hope that the Department of Education will be a place of intellectual passion and ferment, processing many ideas, and effectively implementing the best of them. Tom Horne

They can also pursue a master's degree in education in our Master of Arts Program . A "fast track" option allows students to complete requirements for certification while pursuing the graduate degree. Students in these two distance learning programs stay in their home communities and do their coursework through independent study. There are limited residency requirements for both programs.

Search By Doug Murphy Staff Writer Lawmakers know that next year's state budget will need to be sliced by more than $1 billion, but that hasn't stopped them from filing a wide assortment of bills in the first full week of the new legislative session that ended Jan. 17. Some, like Senate Bill 1027 and House Bill 2049, would cut the number of reports state agencies are required to file each year, saving money for beleaguered state agencies. Others, like HB 2004, would add to the number of reports required each year. And then there are bills, like SB 1014 that would require half of Arizona's National Guard to train within 20 miles of the Arizona/Mexico border each year and SB 1017 that would overturn the National Football League's policy requiring a television blackout if a local game is not sold out. Here is a breakdown of a few of the 380 bills that have been filed, as of Jan. 17:

Extractions: The College of Science Teacher Preparation Program provides science majors the opportunity to take courses and engage in school experiences that will lead to a Bachelor of Science degree in Science Education, to a minor in Science Education or to eligibility for secondary science teacher certification. How is the program unique The Science Teacher Preparation Program is a unique pathway to science teacher certification. Science majors spend significant amounts of time working with mentor teachers in area middle schools and high schools. Program students have exciting opportunities to work with classroom teachers to experiment with ideas that are discussed in their college courses. The teaching courses focus on science, rather than a mix of teaching subject areas. This allows for a unique blend of science and pedagogy in the courses. The science teaching courses and the school-based classroom experiences are taught and supervised by faculty and adjunct instructor who themselves have significant experiences in secondary science teaching. Science majors may graduate in their disciplinary majors and simultaneously complete the Teacher Preparation Program courses to become eligible for teacher certification. This provides a degree of flexibility not common among other teacher preparation programs.
