Religious Reform School Accused Of Abuse In Lawsuit Stilley said his client returned to arkansas after escaping the Florida school. Missourilaw exempts religious boarding schools like Mountain Park from state http://www.teenliberty.org/MtnParkLawsuit.htm
Extractions: Religious reform school accused of abuse in lawsuit THE ASSOCIATED PRESS 07/10/02 POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. A federal lawsuit on an Arkansas teen-ager's behalf asks a judge to mandate reforms at Mountain Park religious reform school in Missouri, and in Florida at their Arcadia school, calling their disciplining practices abusive. Missouri's Mountain Park Boarding Academy, according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Cape Girardeau, has subjected students to austere forms of discipline, denied outside communication, limited bathroom breaks and allowed students to sleep as little as five hours a day. The suit is on behalf of 17-year-old Jordan Blair, who attended Mountain Park last year and later transferred to the sister Palm Lane Academy in Florida. Blair, of Alma, Ark., bolted from the Florida school while on an errand with a school worker. Mountain Park is an independent Baptist school enrolling 120 girls and 35 boys near Patterson, Mo., about 110 miles south of St. Louis. Palm Lane, in Arcadia, enrolls about 50 students.

Extractions: SUIT SAYS MOUNTAIN PARK RELIGIOUS SCHOOL USES BARBARIC July 9, 2002 By Matt Franck of the Post-Dispatch Staff SUIT SAYS MOUNTAIN PARK RELIGIOUS SCHOOL USES BARBARIC DISCIPLINE FOUNDER CALLS EX-STUDENT'S ALLEGATIONS RIDICULOUS A lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court accuses a religious reform school near Poplar Bluff, Mo., of abusing its students with "barbaric means of thought control, humiliation, degradation and punishment." The suit against Mountain Park Boarding Academy says students are subjected to austere forms of discipline, denied outside communication and limited to two short bathroom breaks and as little as five hours of sleep a day. The suit was filed last week in Cape Girardeau on behalf of Arkansas resident Jordan Blair, 17, who attended Mountain Park last year and later transferred to Palm Lane Academy, a sister school in Florida. Blair, of Alma, Ark., escaped from the Florida school while on an errand with a school employee. The suit seeks an unspecified amount of damages. But Blair's attorney, Oscar Stilley of Fort Smith, Ark., said his main goal is to force the two schools to change how they discipline and treat students. The suit asks the court to mandate reforms at the school immediately. "That is the central issue: to stop this kind of mistreatment," Stilley said Monday. Mountain Park's founder, the Rev. Bob Wills, described the allegations Monday as "ridiculous" and said he trusted the lawsuit would be dismissed. He said the suit is based exclusively on accounts from one student with questionable credibility.

Extractions: www.corpun.com www.corpun.com Archive : US Schools May 1998 Batesville Daily Guard, Batesville, Arkansas, 1 May 1998 By Guard Staff The Southside School District has only about 60 percent of the enrollment of the Batesville School District, but it gave its students over 10 times as many paddlings as Batesville did during the 1996-97 school year. Such a contrast - Southside's 852 instances of corporal punishment to Batesville's 80 - is a perfect illustration of the contrasting philosophies on the application of the "board of education" to the "seat of learning" in Arkansas, which leads the nation in school spankings according to a national report. While most area schools reported more paddlings being given to junior high students than older and younger pupils, Batesville Junior High gave no paddlings in 1996-97 according to Department of Education figures and has almost never paddled for the past several years, principal Harry Crossett said. "We don't use corporal punishment in the junior high building," Crossett said. "Saturday School is much more effective, and from a legal standpoint, it's a lot less complicated as well."

Extractions: In Arkansas, mandatory public schooling through eighth grade was first enacted in 1872, when the state's constitution was rewritten following the Civil War. Many one-room schools were established in rural communities, with bigger facilities built in towns. Prior to the 1960s schools were segregated. Benton County's only school for African Americans was in Bentonville, where much of the county's black population lived. For many years this poorly funded school held classes in the black community's church and fraternal lodge hall. The first public school classes in Rogers were held in space rented from the Rogers Academy, a private school. By 1888, just seven years after the town's founding, a two-story brick public school (later called Westside) was erected at Fifth and Walnut Streets. Within a few years the town had outgrown the building.
