State computers are used to determine the eligibility of beneficiaries and the disbursement of payments. In addition to supporting the administration and oversight of these programs, computers help make sure that eligible beneficiaries get the services they need and pay providers of these services such as foster care and child care. State computers are used to identify and locate delinquent non-custodial parents and collect child support payments. The five programs, operated by the States and territories, receive over $30 billion in federal funds to promote the economic and social well-being of families, children, individuals, and communities. ACF has conducted on-site assessments in fifty-five jurisdictions to evaluate the Y2K compliance of the operations of the five high impact programs. ACF visited the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to assess information systems. As of mid-November 1999, 26 jurisdictions are at low risk for possible problems in all five program areas, 23 are at medium risk in one or more areas, while 6 jurisdictions are currently at high risk in one or more programs. ACF continues to work with states to assume readiness.

Extractions: The Arkansas Area Health Education Centers Program was founded in 1973, through combined efforts of the Governor, the State Legislature, and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), as the primary educational outreach effort of UAMS and the principal means of decentralizing medical and other health professions education throughout the state. Seven centers in El Dorado Fayetteville Fort Smith Jonesboro ... Texarkana , and Helena serve as training sites for students in the fields of medicine nursing pharmacy , and various allied health professions , as well as for medical residents specializing in family practice. The AHEC training approach emphasizes primary care, which covers general health education and basic medical care for the whole family. Each AHEC extends its programs into a multiple county service area making programs and services accessible to more potential students and rural providers. Quality training experiences in community settings away from the academic medical center expose students and residents to practice opportunities and realities in underserved rural communities, helping to encourage rural practice choices. The teaching ambience that results, as well as AHEC library services and continuing education offerings, all serve to enhance the professional environments and support systems in participating communities, and aid in provider retention.

Extractions: Salt of the earth - above the salt - not worth his salt - odd little phrases that have lost their original meanings. But each idiom reflects the importance of salt to human life. Whether used for seasoning, preservation, currency, or a host of industrial uses, sodium chloride is one of the most important minerals on the planet. Salt is obtained by mining land-based deposits (left over from ancient oceans) or by extraction from brine (salty water). Over the millennia salt has had an impact on nearly every aspect of life. Salt formed the basis of trade for many ancient civilizations, whose cities often sprang up near large deposits. Salt rations for Roman soldiers were called "salarium agentum", hence todays term salary. In Greece slaves were bought with salt, prompting a buyer viewing a less-than-strapping individual to remark that he was not worth his salt.
