Extractions: In response to a request from the Commission on the Black Colleges and the Council of Presidents of the Black Colleges, the 1972 General Conference of the United Methodist Church established the "Black College Fund" as one of the apportioned general church funds. The objective of the fund is to marshal financial support for institutions of higher education which are related to the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of The United Methodist Church and which have historically served primarily the educational needs of black students. These institutions recognize, recruit, and graduate students of promise, both students who require special nurture and training and those with nationally competitive academic profiles. These institutions serve as intellectual and spiritual founts preserving and expanding upon the rich history, traditions, and culture of a people and a nation. Today, it is critical for The United Methodist Church to renew its commitment to provide, through the Black College Fund, major support to these schools because of the unique role they play in U.S. education. The societal inequities of race and class prevalent within U.S. culture still require educational institutions committed to academic excellence as they serve as intellectual, spiritual and cultural reservoirs of African-American history and tradition.

Parish, Associate Project Director; Amy Pomeranz, Resource and Policy Analyst; Richard Hemp, Associate Project Director; Mary C. Rizzolo, Graduate Research Assistant; and David Braddock, Head, all with the Department of Disability and Human Development, University of Illinois at Chicago. Introduction Family support consists of services provided to families with a member who has a developmental disability. Services can include home modifications, in-home and out-of-home respite, sibling programs, family counseling, parent support groups, after-school programs, education programs, behavioral training, and essentially any service funded to assist families to continue to care for their child or adult child with developmental disabilities in the family home. Cash subsidy is a particular form of family support where families directly receive cash or vouchers that enable them to purchase the services or supports they need.

The area is generally flat and densely wooded, mostly with tall pine and oak. The 90's have brought to Gurdon a new public library, Senior Adult Center and lake at the City's Park. A new high school was completed in 1995 promising a bright future for the community. Serving the southern half of Clark County, the Gurdon School District is comprised of three campuses, whose combined enrollment is approximately 900 students.
