Central Arkansas Library System arkansas History Educational Materials A Selected Bibliography forSchool media centers. arkansas Libraries, XLIX (Feb. 1992), 511. http://www.cals.lib.ar.us/butlercenter/bib.htm
Extractions: Little Rock, Arkansas The purpose of this bibliography is to compile in handy form a listing of publications and other materials which teachers of Arkansas History might find useful. This is not a comprehensive bibliography of everything that ought to be found in a school media center or public library. Rather, it is intended to help the individual teacher pull together the information needed to prepare lesson plans and effectively teach about our state. The teacher can use this list to get started, then build on it as time goes by. Almost every month something new and useful is published in the field. Becoming an informed teacher of Arkansas History is a life-time process, one which involves much readingbut it is a satisfying experience. The bulk of the titles in this list are still in-print and available. However, a number of out-of-print titles are included. These materials can usually be found in college and university libraries as well as the larger public libraries in the state. I would urge you to familiarize yourself with the Arkansas collection in your local libraries. Computer software titles, as well as vidoes, are not included in this list, but it is expected that these resources will become more numerous as time goes by.

Extractions: Assistant Professor JoAnn D'Alisera Dr. D'Alisera received her Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1997. Her dissertation examines ways in which ethnically diverse immigrants/residents from Sierra Leone utilize Islam as a common bond to fashion a sense of community, how their interaction with a broader Muslim community shapes a sense of belonging and alienation within the American context, and how they and their children struggle with and accommodate to different senses of what it means to be Muslims, Africans, and Americans of African descent in the United States. Dr. D'Alisera's most recent research explores further the importance of religious institutions as spiritual centers in transnational communities, the ways in which religious commodities are utilized to affirm personal piety and identity, as well as call others to faith, and the growing production of popular "religious texts" in a variety of media (such as videos, CD-ROM, children's literature, and the World Wide Web). Dr. D'Alisera is currently working on a book that deals with the way in which Sierra Leonean Muslims seek to preserve nostalgic images of "back home," and how their children come to view Africa through negative popular imaginings they encounter in American society.

In Arkansas, the project was sponsored by the Arkansas Friends for Better Schools, the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, and the Study Circles Resource Center (SCRC). Calling the Roll brought multiple, diverse groups of 8-12 people together to thoughtfully discuss how well public education is working in their communities. Participants agreed to attend four two-hour meetings held in schools, churches and community centers. North Little Rock Faces Teacher Strike "We didnt have much to lose by becoming involved in Calling the Roll," admits Little Rock school board member Teresa Burl. "We wanted anything that could improve our communication, anything that could make people aware of whats going on in schools and give us some input. We get a lot of criticism from the media that were not keeping the public informed." "The perception was that we (the school board members) were tyrants and we were just rubberstamping everything that any administrator gave us," Burl said.
