The NYTS report provides first-ever national data on the prevalence of current tobacco use among middle school students and documents the emergence of bidis and kreteks among middle and high school students. Approximately 15,000 students in grades 6 through 12 from about 131 public and private schools participated in the NYTS. This is not a comprehensive bibliography of everything that ought to be found in a school media center or public library. The teacher can use this list to get started, then build on it as time goes by. Almost every month something new and useful is published in the field. In Arkansas, the project was sponsored by the Arkansas Friends for Better Schools, the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, and the Study Circles Resource Center (SCRC). Calling the Roll brought multiple, diverse groups of 8-12 people together to thoughtfully discuss how well public education is working in their communities. North Little Rock Faces Teacher Strike "We didn’t have much to lose by becoming involved in Calling the Roll," admits Little Rock school board member Teresa Burl.
