News Story Scaife said the new certification program offered by the math and computer sciencedepartment is a good way to help alleviate the teacher shortage in arkansas. http://comm.astate.edu/herald/archive/newsS00/0121teacher.html
Extractions: The Herald Staff A special mathematics teacher certification program is now being offered during the summer and fall semesters. The program is for persons who already have a teaching certificate in another subject area and who have taken courses in college algebra and trigonometry or pre-calculus. The goal of the program is to help alleviate the shortage of qualified math teachers in the state of Arkansas by certifying more teachers for grades seven through 12. "There is a strong need for math teachers statewide. We get inquiries every year from schools across Arkansas needing teachers," Roger Abernathy, chair of the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics, said. The level of difficulty of mathematics and the low pay scale for Arkansas teachers have contributed to the shortage of teachers, Abernathy said. Statistics show only about 60-70 percent of teachers are certified in the area they are teaching, Abernathy added.

This Bulletin describes those regulations which are currently in place. The purpose of this Information Bulletin is to summarize the information most commonly sought by members and local leaders. Please bear in mind that this Information Bulletin is for INFORMATION ONLY , and is not to be considered as an official interpretation of the rules and regulations of the Commissioner. Official answers on the interpretation of certification regulations and certification status can only be obtained from the Office of Teaching of the State Education Department (see sidebar for contact information). HIGHLIGHTS Certification may be achieved in six ways: through the completion of an approved program; through individual assessment of a candidate's educational background; through Interstate Agreements, including the Northeast Regional Credential; through completion of a new alternative certification program, and new regulations for out-of-state teachers.

THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER CERTIFICATION AT PRESENT Typically, beginning foreign language (FL) teachers in the United States must complete an "approved program" of teacher education in a four-year college or university, have a certain minimum grade point average, and complete a specified number of credit hours in the foreign language to be certified. To receive "approved program" status, institutions must demonstrate to their state department of education that they are fulfilling state standards. Most states model their standards after two statements developed by the FL teaching profession in the 1950s and '60s titled, QUALIFICATIONS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS OF MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES and GUIDELINES FOR TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES (Paquette 1966). The QUALIFICATIONS are brief descriptions of "minimal," "good," and "superior" competence in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, applied linguistics, culture and civilization, and pedagogy. The GUIDELINES describe model programs, using the QUALIFICATIONS as minimum objectives (Wing 1984).
