Then go ahead and try a bite; its already bound to be quite satisfying. After that, stir in the deliciously funny Queen Latifah, who seems to be the taste everyones craving these days. A few more stirs, and then? Well, right about then you should be seeing hordes of people stream in for a nip of that glorious confection, made as it was from such top-of-the-line, cant-fail ingredients. One problem, though: When the end result is Bringing Down the House, the new movie, shockingly, executive- produced by the Queen herself, youre going to find yourself stuck with a bunch of leftoversas well as a whole theater full of cranky and still-hungry moviegoers.

Extractions: RUSSIAN ORGANIZED CRIME With the demise of the bipolar ideology, we are building a better, safer world. Yet, we have also inherited a new host of problems, which given the increasingly interdependent global society effects all of us, no matter which country develops a particular problem. Russian OC has certainly been one such problem because of its size, geography, financial capital involved, global reach, effect on developed countries' economies, and other aspects of society. In addressing the issue of Russian OC, I would like to start the way we always do in preparation of reports for our clients: with an executive summary. To establish certain important factors, I would like to state the following: The situation in Russia changes very quickly. What was applicable in describing the Russian reality even two years ago, is largely outdated now. The problem of Russian OC was first ignored by the West. Later the West caught on mainly the media. The same media lacking understanding oversimplified, overexposed and oversensationalized the problem. The image of the Russian mob that emerged in the past few years is hopelessly obsolete. Indeed, Russian OC exists and presents a problem for Western businesses in Russia. But the problem is not as acute as it was in the early- and especially mid-1990s, at the height of free-for-all capitalism in Russia. In fact, the situation is changing for the better. Fairly quickly too.

Other special musical moments I recall from childhood are the chromatic chaconne bassline from the opening chorus of Bach's Cantata no. 78, the Grieg Piano Concerto, and the great tenor Mario del Monaco singing Pagliacci. Man, what a voice he had. We had a copy of "Twilight Time" by the Platters, 1957 or '58. Man, what a beautiful tune that was for a four year-old to hear! But popular music really didn't come into the picture for me until the Beatles, Stones, Motown, and the folk-rock era in the '60s. My sister Jeannine would drag along her little brother and go club-hopping all afternoon on MacDougald Street, where guys rehearsed right on stage in front of a relaxed audience. Those days in Greenwich Village, there was as much music happening during the day as at night. You could go into Manhattan on weekend afternoons and hear tunes being written and rehearsed by cutting-edge rock bands long before they made it big. Outdoor summer concerts at Central Park were a buck to get in, and always a double billsometimes totally incongruous combinations like Led Zeppelin and Herbie Mann, Mongo Santamaria and Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

Extractions: November 27 - December 10, 1998 feature stories Editorial The killing of a human being on one of the nation's most watched television programs last Sunday night was a horror. Many of us for years had read of Dr. Jack Kevorkian's "physician-assisted suicides" for terminally ill people and looked upon it as possibly the most humane act to end a person's suffering. However, viewing the act, the lethal injection, the impersonal behavior of the doctor, the aloneness of the patient on 60 Minutes shed new light on this obscene practice. Coincidentally, this month, Dr. Michael J. Franzblau, a physician who has dedicated his life to revealing the evils of medical experimentation during the Third Reich, spoke to an audience at North Shore Community College. He explained that the "German Volk," which began to gain acceptance in the late 19th century, was a concept which lent an almost mystical quality to the German people as a pure race. Then what did that say about all others who were not Aryans? They were the minorities and the disabled - people who were viewed as placing a burden on the nation. Contrary to the fundamental code of physicians "to do no harm," doctors of the Third Reich had to place the state above the individual.

Yet, while earlier research pointed to a dearth of child care, there is little data on where child care is needed within Los Angeles County, as well as little information on specific types of care available like special needs care or care during non-traditional hours. In 1999, the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) contracted with Policy Analysis for California Education (PACE) to conduct a study of the licensed child-care supply for all children in the county. Via a survey of over 2000 child-care providers in Los Angeles County, PACE was asked to determine the following: How does the supply of licensed child care vary across the county? Are vacancy rates lower or higher in certain communities?

Extractions: ICS Library ... We have stepped up our fundraising activities in an effort to offset our increasing costs. This is discussed more in the "Message from the Editor" below. There have been some changes in the bulletin boards too. Dorie Straus is the new moderator for the Cellist-by-Night chat board (thanks, Dorie!). We have also added a "Professional Performers and Educators" board to our collection of bulletin boards. This was done in the hopes that we will get more participation from the many professionals out there. It is co-moderated by Robert Battey (thanks, Bob!) and Tim Finholt. Many will be happy to know that we do not envision the ICS adding any more chat boards, (though we are pondering what to do about college-age cellists). The traffic on our website has increased to the point that our internet service provider is sending us overage notices, requiring that we upgrade our account or they will disable the website, which translates to higher fees, of course. This is great news because it means that our website is becoming a highly-used resource on the internet (nobody likes to eat in an empty restaurant), but it does require that we step up our fund-raising activities. Because of this, we are looking to the membership to help us financially in as many fun and easy ways as possible.

Where appropriate, those contributions are specifically credited within the text. Portions of this history were previously published in the Diaspora Potrezebie, the quarterly newsletter of the Alumni Association of the American Community School (AA/ACS) at Beirut. Extractions: Acknowledgments I want to thank all of the people at the five institutions that I interviewed. My thanks also to those who showed me around, explained how things work, and, especially, told me how they feel about America Reads. My highest tribute goes to the America Reads contacts that are making a difference in the lives of college students and the futures of so many young Californians-and told us how they were getting things done. I especially want to thank the leaders of the five programs at the institutions that we studied in depth: Dick Cone and Tina Koneazny at USC, Judy Rauner and Elaine Elliott at USD, Anita Madrid at UC Berkeley, Andra Verstraete at Glendale Community College, and Rosemary Hurtado at SFSU. Their generosity, insights, enthusiasm and commitment to their tasks are stunning. I am grateful for the time they gave to this project, and I am inspired and humbled by their example. Finally, I want to thank President Robert A. Corrigan for his inspired leadership and devotion to America Reads, and my colleagues at the Corporation for National Service and at America Reads/America Counts at the U.S. Department of Education.

Armenia and Azerbaijan began fighting over the exclave in 1988; the struggle escalated after both countries attained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. By May 1994, when a cease-fire took hold, Armenian forces held not only Nagorno-Karabakh but also a significant portion of Azerbaijan proper.
