One of the oldest cities of the world, with a population of roughly one million, Yerevan offers a wide variety of educational and cultural opportunities, and a friendly and safe social environment. The city is dotted with ancient churches, monuments, restaurants, cafes, and other recreational facilities. Students will study at Yerevan State University. When: July 29 through August 16, 2002. The Program: Utilizing instructors affiliated with the ASU Critical Languages Institute (CLI) , this three-week Yerevan Practicum will expand language skills and introduce participants to the culture of ancient and modern Armenia. Formal classroom language instruction each morning is combined with local excursions to historic sites. Students participating in the three-week Yerevan Practicum will receive two ASU credits. Eligibility: The Yerevan practicum is open to all ASU and non-ASU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to non-degree students. Normally, participants in the Yerevan Practicum will have completed at least one year of intensive Armenian language study at ASU in the eight-week summer Critical Languages institute.

The Armenian alphabet, which consists of 38 characters, was created in 406 A.D. by a monk named Mesrop Mashtots (the original alphabet had 36 letters, two characters were added later). The first work of literature with the new alphabet was the translation of the Bible from Greek. This translation has been since regarded as a masterpiece by many linguists. During the centuries the dialect into which the Bible was translated became the standard language - Grabar (Krapar), or Classical Armenian . Numerous literary works, both original and translations, were written in that period in grabar. Many works in Classical Greek, Latin and other languages exist today only in their Armenian translations. A unique collection of priceless ancient documents is preserved in the National Depository of Manuscripts, the Matenadaran, in Yerevan. I have experience writing code, but not open-source code. I'd love to hear from someone wise who can help me figure out how synchronization of the code is done, etc. And I'd love to hear from someone familiar with i18n issues. (Armenian language uses its own non-Latin alphabet, and the non-alpha keys on the standard keyboard considering, there are 39 letters to our alphabet!) I'm looking to undertake this as a joint-forces project with the school-age kids I'm teaching computer classes to, in Spitak, Armenia as a part of the SpiTux Project I've started last Fall.
