At first, Johannes Itten was in charge of both in the role of master of form; Oskar Schlemmer succeeded him in 1922. The sculptor Josef Hartwig, who was to become famous principally for his purist Bauhaus chess set, was master craftsman. Well in accordance with the programmatic guidelines of the Bauhaus tending towards architecture, three-dimensional work for building was the main focus of the workshop. In 1921/22, the wood carving workshop produced reliefs and wooden sculptures for the house designed by Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer for the entrepreneur Adolf Sommerfeld in Berlin. The workshop for stone sculpture created wall decorations for both school buildings in the context of the large Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar in the Summer of 1923. Josef Hartwig, Chess set, 1924, Cherry wood, natural and black coloration Of the free sculpture created in both workshops parallel to these commissions, only little has survived. A good example for these works is the "Architectural Sculpture" by Otto Werner. Its massive structure, together with the complex spatial layering of cubic elements, are reminiscent of contemporary forms from "New Building", but evoke at the same time associations of a statuary human figure. The influence of Oskar Schlemmer is obvious: his sculptures and reliefs also present a blending of architectural and figurative elements. Whereas in Weimar the emphasis of the workshop lay on free artistic work, Dessau concentrated more on educational aspects.
