Extractions: The exhibition comprises 81 works on paper spanning the years 1856 through 1900. Also included is the oil painting, Vera Cruz (1885). The exhibition is drawn in its entirety from the Gilcrease Museum, which, since purchasing the contents of the artists studio from his daughter, Ruth Moran, in the late 1940s, has been the largest repository of works by Moran in the world. Guest curators Donna Gustafson, chief curator of exhibitions at the AFA, and Anne Morand, curator of art at the Gilcrease Museum, arranged the works chronologically, charting the artists many journeys throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico, and demonstrating his wide-ranging interests. While celebrated as one of the finest chroniclers of the American West, Moran strove to incorporate his personal experience of landscape into his paintings, relying on drawings he created in the field to capture the essence of any given scene. As Gustafson writes in her essay accompanying the exhibition, The Poetry of Place focuses on Moran as an artist for whom the poetry of a landscape, or as Moran would say, the 'impression' that a landscape induced, was more compelling than any topographical accuracy.

Extractions: Towards the end of his life, the painter Thomas Moran wrote: "It has often occurred to me as a curious and anomalous fact, that American artists are prone to seek the subjects for their art in foreign lands, to the almost entire exclusion of their own.... That there is a nationalism in art needs no proof. It is bred from a knowledge of and sympathy with [one's own] surroundings and no foreigner can imbue himself with a spirit of a country not his own. Therefore he should paint his own land...." As a young man, Moran did just what he admonished other artists for doing: he went to Europe to study painting and find inspiration. But at the end of his prolific career he was more closely associated with the landscapes of the American West than almost any other painter. Moran first achieved national recognition for the work he created while accompanying a geological and geographic survey headed by Ferdinand V. Hayden. In the late 19th century, the U.S. government made the surveying of Western territory an integral part of its domestic policy. Washington wanted to investigate the West with a view to promoting settlement and commerce and exploiting natural resources. From 1867-1879, the Federal government supported four Great Surveys, each extremely ambitious in scope; each expected to provide a comprehensive written report, accompanied by visual materials. Hayden's own instructions from the Secretary of the Interior were "to secure as full materials as possible for the illustration of your final report, such as sketches, photographs, etc."

Photographs of Artists Collection I is a group of photographs which the Archives of American Art assembled from various sources during its first twenty years as an organization dedicated to collecting documentation on the visual arts in America. By the time the collection was microfilmed in 1973, nearly 1300 photographs had been gathered to form a reference file offering easy access to portraits of artists, artists in their studios, artists at work, artists with their work, art instructors and classes, art administrators, and other related photographs. The bulk of the photographs in the collection were removed from their original location in artists' papers, gallery records, or art organization records, the major sources being the Macbeth Gallery records; Forbes Watson papers;

The awesome beauty of the American West combined with the skills and imagination of Thomas Moran are showcased in a grand retrospective at the National Gallery of Art. In addition to Moran's celebrated, epic oil paintings of the West, which form the heart of the display, his superb watercolors and rarely exhibited images of industrial scenes, marinescapes, as well as views of Long Island, Italy, England and Mexico document both the diverse talent and extensive travels of this titan of Nineteenth Century American art. This first-ever Moran retrospective brings together over 100 of his finest works. Of special interest is a triptych of three panoramic Western canvases united for the first time, plus "The Three Tetons," which hangs in the Oval Office of the White House, and a selection of the artist's original watercolor sketches of Yellowstone. The latter helped inspire Congress to establish our first national park in 1872. The exhibition coincides with the 125th anniversary celebration of the creation of Yellowstone National Park. Admirably organized by Nancy K. Anderson, the National Gallery's associate curator of American and British paintings, in association with the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Okla., "Thomas Moran" continues in Washington through January 11, 1998. It then travels to the Gilcrease, which has the largest collection of Moran's works (February 8-May 10), and the Seattle Art Museum (June 11-August 30).
