Extractions: Artists' Brushes and Mops - Raphael Raphael have been known as the Rolls Royce of artists' brushes for over 100 years and a brief background on their history follows. At NWPS, we are proud to stock the full range of these brushes and happy to have this association with perhaps the oldest artists' supply manufacturer. Raphael brushes have been made in France since 1793. The original workshop was located in Paris, but later relocated to Oinville, 50 km from Paris where it remained until the end of the last century. In 1925, the fine art brush factory was shifted east to become 'Atelier St. Brieuc' in Brittany. Today, the company is still owned by the Sauer family who since 1920, have additionally manufactured the extensive 'Berge' range of artists' linens for painting. There has been much debate over the merit of natural fibres compared to the synthetic manufacture of brush hair. Natural hair takes up greater amounts of fluid and also holds it in the brush so it is more evenly dispersed. Natural fibres taper as they grow, setting to a perfectly formed tip. Much of this perfection is associated with the skill of the brushmaker and the selection of fibres used. The most expensive fibre is Russian Kolinsky sable, a fibre unequalled for its spring, durability and long life. These hairs are clipped from the tip of the tail of the sable, with the longest hairs being the most valuable. A large handmade Kolinsky sable watercolour brush can have a selling price of $500.00, but will last for years if well-cared for, even if used on a daily basis.

Raphael's mother died when he was eight years old and his father died three years later, leaving Raphael an orphan. Raphael became a magister (head of a painting school) at age 17. When he was 21, he moved to Florence, the art capital of Europe at the time. It was there that he met and studied with other great artists of the time, including Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo By the time he was 26, Raphael was recognized as one of Italy's most important artists, popular with popes, rich merchants and other leaders as well as ordinary people. Raphael was known to be sweet-natured and agreeablein fact, the opposite in temperament of his peer, Michelangelo. Raphael was not only considered, in his day, to be the greatest painter of all time, he was also an architect and a specialist in Greek and Roman art. Some of his most famous works include "Saint George and the Dragon" (right) and "The Marriage of the Virgin". He died on his 37th birthday of a "high and continuous fever".
